Father LEFT BLANK = ILLEGITIMATE

Q.E.D

Sandra

Sandra Report 26 Sep 2020 11:57

Yes I do have his marriage certificate.
Maurice Wallace 33 Bachelor married at Rodmarton, Glocs to Susannah Phelps 31 Spinster. Both listed as servants. Maurice was living at Culkerton and Susannah was living at Berkeley Castle. Susannahs father was Joseph Phelps and Maurices was left blank. Witnesses Charles Phelps and Jane Williams (family)
21st September 1867

On Maurices death certificate 25th September 1881 aged 45 at his home in Lower Cam it was in the presence of Hannah Brazingtree, neighbour.

getting there :

Your family - you must believe what you wish, but the documented evidence doesn’t support your theory about Maurice.

Do you have his marriage cert?

The marriage COULD NOT have taken place in JULY. The Banns weren't called until SEPTEMBER

Sandra Report 26 Sep 2020 00:57

Ok everyone. Firstly I apologise for not including all information I mistakenly thought what I had posted before would still all be there so here it all is.
As I stated I had been confused about Maurice for so long as he is my direct line.
As a result I posted question for help and signed up with Genes, Thegenealogist, myheritage, fmf , CLDS, for a while and all the free ones and bought copies of available certificates.
Through all of this I knew for definate through census records etc That Maurice was given by Sarah Wallace to her brother in law Henry Wallis. Henry and his siblings were all born in Brinkworth and their parents were Francis Wallis1770 and Betty (Elizabeth) Colinburn ( spelled any number of ways.)
Henry the oldest - b1793 - d1865 was married twice having 1 child with each.
1 Ann Whitfield b1784 - 1848? son Thomas Wallis b1821.plus 3 more
2 Elizabeth Reeve b1791 - 1873 had Joseph Wallace b1824 - 1882.
as far as we know

Henrys brother was Thomas Wallis b1798 and married to Edith Vizard b 1826
they had Richard Wallace/is 1844, Jacob Wallace/is 1847, and Phoebe Wallace/is 1849.

Also brother Francis Wallis b 1800 who married Sarah Pinnell b 1800. in 1821
They had Elizabeth Wallis b1822
John Wallis b 1823
George Wallis b 1824
William Wallis b 1826
Charles Wallis b 1829
Jane Wallis b 1830
Ann Wallis b 1831
Peter Wallis b 1833
Mary Wallis b c1834
Maurice Wallace b 1835
Hester b 1838
Martha b 1840
Reuben b 1843
Asher b 1849- 1917

These has all appeared on various census records of all the different family members. I am only half way through double checking the marriages and children of the siblings as I believed for a long time there was only Maurice.
Seeing that the first child was born into poverty, despite Francis always being in work I believe this was the reason Maurice was given away to Francis's brother Henry. Henry had done quite well for himself running a farm in Hankerton and going on to a farm of 39 acres in Oaksey (Mambys Farm) He married 2 ladies not at the same time, and a child with each Thomas b 1821 and Joseph b 1924. plus 3 more with Ann

The 3 Wallis brothers also had a sister Elizabeth b 1800 - d 1801

So back to Maurice, His mother was Sarah Pinnell Married to Francis Wallis in Brinkworth. we believe it was down to poverty and too many children and the chance of a better life that he was given to Henry to raise on his farm in Oaksey and as such was christened in Oaksey. That way he couldnt be removed to Brinkworth like their first child was in hard times.

When he grew up he left to work with horses as a groom at Rodmarton where he met his wife to be Susannh Phelps. She was a servant and he was a groom. They married in21/7/1867 at Rodmarton, Cirencester
They went on to have 3 children Henry (Harry) Wallace b 1869-1944, Fanny Florence Wallace b 1878 - 1914, and Albert Wallace b!880 -1929. Albert is my great grandfather. Harry married Mary W Meredith b 1899 in Bristol and lived in Bristol as a coachman , Fanny Florence Wallace married Percy J Styles in 6/9/1902 In Eastbourne, Sussex. And Albert married Millicent Osborne ( also spelled many ways)they married in Coventry 1900 and had 4 children.
twins Herbert Wallace and Albert Wallace b 1901 Herbert d 1967 my grandfather. and his brother Albert died in 1976, Sidney b 1903 d1904, and Henry S Wallace (Harry) b1905-1984.
Maurice Died suddenly with apoplexy and his wife Susannah had a stroke or fit , Albert snr was only 1
This is why Albert Wallace snr said Millicent was dead on the census records. We know she wasnt she just went off and left them .
Hope all of this is making more sense now .
I like to research and double and triple check and get a friend to check before I accept it as with all the different spellings and lying about where they were born its easy to slip up. My Wallis /Wallace family have always seemed to be scattered to the four winds.
Thanks for all your help everyone

Sandra -
you mentioned the name Collingburn.

Where did you find that? In what context?

I also agree with Erika that Maurice was born illegitimately.

His baptism record again - from Ancestry this time:

Mauris Wallis
in the Wiltshire, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1916
Name: Mauris Wallis
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 6 Dec 1835
Baptism Place: Oaksey, Wiltshire, England
Parish as it Appears: Oaksey
Mother: Sarah Wallis

If you have a sub to Ancestry, Sandra, have a look at the image of the original document.
It clearly shows that no father is named.

You said earlier, "I was stuck for so long because Maurice ( No 10 of 14)was given to his uncle to raise at Oaksey and I only had Sarah Wallace as mother so wrongly assumed she was a single woman and from Oaksey."

You were correct about Sarah the first time. Maurice's mother was unmarried.

Henry Wallis/Wallace (born c1793 in Brinkworth) was indeed Maurice's uncle, per 1851 census already posted .

Francis Wallis/Wallace (born c 1795 Brinkworth) was Henry's brother . Can't prove it from existing documentation, but it seems very likely, given birthplace and nearness in age.

Henry's father was called Francis, per the banns for Henry's second marriage in 1849:

Henry Walles
in the Wiltshire, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1916
Name: Henry Walles [ farmer, Oaksey ]
Gender: Male
Age: Of Full Age
Marriage or Bann Date: 26 Apr 1849
Marriage or Bann Place: Charlton, St John the Baptist, Wiltshire, England
Parish as it Appears: Charlton
Father: Frances Walles [labourer]
Spouse: Elizabeth Reeve

Therefore , by logical deduction, Sarah Wallis (Maurice's mother, unmarried) was a sister of both Francis and Henry.

She was NOT Sarah Pinnell, who had married Francis in 1821.

You still haven't said when Maurice was born.....................

Who - and when/where - did he marry?

EDITED

I've looked on here and find you have him in your tree as born 1835 in Oaksey - it would have been so much better if you'd given that info in your opening post - or, at the very least, when the question was asked

Thank you everybody for your responses. Shirley, Maddie. ErikaH and Kucinta, thank you so much.
I have now got the Baptism, Marriage, Banns and death records for Wallace/Wallis and Pinnell/ Pinnel Pynnell/ Pinel family to 1600. Just working out who's who in family groups.
Maddie the removal record is interesting, I knew Elizabeth 1822 had been removed and I thought she was taken as a baby into the work/ poor house so it was good to see mom and dad were with her. I am assuming when people are removed it was because they were poor and the parish didn't want them to be a burden on the church but they were born in Brinkworth and living in Hankerton.
They certainly were a fertile couple and the children managed to survive. 14 poor gal.
My Maurice Wallace is my great great grandad so Francis Wallace/Wallis and Sarah Pinnell are my 3x great grand parents. I was stuck for so long because Maurice ( No 10 of 14)was given to his uncle to raise at Oaksey and I only had Sarah Wallace as mother so wrongly assumed she was a single woman and from Oaksey.
Getting somewhere now.
Thanks again to everyone for helping x
