I am after some help please.

Annie Carter/Burfoot 1898 was married to a Reginald R Moon 1891 and had 5 children who one of them was my mother. I can trace back on her fathers side, but apparently her mother Annie was adopted so I understand. I can trace back the Burfoot side, but would like help on the Carter side which I believe was her name before taking the Burfoot surname.

I hope this make sense, any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you’re 100% certain that her birth name was Carter, look for her birth and get a copy of the cert for her mother’s name. Odds are you won’t get any paternal info for her

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 16 May 2020 19:22

Her birth is on freebmd - so order a copy cert. it will probably take a while to arrive, due to the current situation

Or - check if there is a baptism record on Ancestry

living next door to arthur charles copsey who is mentioned in 1911 census

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2020 12:21

The Copseys are only next-door neighbours in 1911 too.

The Ancestry transcription wrongly lumps the two households together.

The FMP transcription, which alviegal posted, is correct.

yes thats right but i wonder why aflred was not on 1911 census unless he was elsewhere that night, clearly living at that adress in er

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2020 12:44

He wasn't with Matilda and the children in 1891 or 1901 either

He was a butler or valet.
Maybe it was a live-in job, so he wasn't actually with the family on census nights, but his official address for voting purposes would still be the same as theirs.

Address: Ballist Cottage Ballis ?? Rd.
Residence Place: Broadstairs and St Peter's, Kent, England

The address is actually Balliol Cottage, Balliol Road.

Although the ERs don't support this theory, I winder if Alfred and Matilda may have separated soon after marriage. Frances seems to have been their only child, and Alfred's not with the family on any census nor in 1939.
They're certainly living separately in 1939, when his occupation can't have been a reason.

Perhaps Alfred's name was kept on the ER for respectability?

Not that this has any bearing on Annie Tilly's origins!
As already mentioned, Tony, you need Annie's birth cert to see her mother's first name, which might help us/you to track her down in censuses.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2020 15:45

Further re ERs,

Matilda and Frances are at 75 High Street, Putney at least from 1933 until 1949, per ERs.
From 1935 onwards, Frances's husband Lawrence George Dixon is also there.
No Alfred in any of those years.

It's interesting that Alfred is also shown at that address - but not on the same list as Matilda and Frances.

Alfred's on a list of "Parliamentary, County and Parochial Electors."
Matilda, Frances and Lawrence are on a "Register of Electors"

ADDED;
I think Alfred's on one list because he's the owner or tenant, while Matilda etc are on another because they are the occupiers of the property.

So many coming and goings with this side of the family and my mother is totally confused lol
