A marriage record from 1822 unfortunately won't tell you where or when he was born, though it might give a very rough idea of his age (eg - "full age"), and where he lived at the time of the marriage.

As far as I can make out with the aid of my magnifying glass on the Essex Archives page, without paying £2.99 to see the full size image, it only says "of this parish" and something which might be his marital status, or possibly occupation.
No indication of age.

From my various searches I think Sarah and Hannah Pamplin are one and the same person. Hannah Pamplin died and was buried on 12th December 1819 and then John Higgleton went on to marry Susan Green (possibly originally Susanna) on 13/05/1822. I am still trying to find out the birth date and place of birth for this John Higgleton. I am rather hoping that he might have been born in 1791 in Colne Engaine, but may have to resort to a marriage certificate between John and Susan Green in 1822.
Any comments would be welcome.

You are doing a great job here. I should have said that there was no current Keldon, now called Kelvedon. I would like to to think this John, (with so many wives?? ha ha ) was the same John of Elizabeth Eyres born in 1791, but like you I am not yet convinced. I am floundering with so many John and James Higgletons. I can't even tie all the deaths to specific persons yet for these two names. This seems to be the only Higgleton family in Kelvedon, the rest are in or around the Colne villages or in Halstead itself. All these places are in Essex.

Regarding Keldon ..............

that is the name used on the marriage certificates and baptism transcripts.

As AG posted ............ it was the old name for Kelvedon plus it was seemingly retained as the name for a part of Kelvedon.

I didn't make it up ......... I copied and posted the EXACT transcripts as found on the major genealogy sites.

There are children born to a John Higgleton (various sp) and wife Sarah ......

...... but they are not baptised in Keldon or Kelveton, and cover the same period as the marriages of John Higgleton to BOTH Hannah and Susan (Susanna/h) Green

AND I saw but cannot now find again, a John and Sarah Higgleton (various spellings) on a census, but again NOT in Kelveton or Halstead.


The image of the marriage of John to Sarah Pamplin MIGHT be on Essex Archive Online .............. it's up to you whether you want to find that site and to see the image. It's not a subscription site, and you can't ask helpers (who are members just like yourself) to pay for you. BUT seeing if it is on that site would tell you the date of the marriage ............... same date, before or after.

FWIW ............... I believe there are TWO John Higgletons who married Pamplin girls. The Pamplins might be sisters, relations or not related.


That's unless you want to believe that one John Higgleton married bigamously not only once but twice, and managed to children on at least 2 of the wives.


I have to go out now, but will try to re-find the baptisms of children to John Higgleton (various spellings) and wife Sarah. Note that the baptisms do not state the wife's maiden name!


FWIW ............ I am not yet convinced that John Hingleton and wife Elizabeth Eyres are the parents of your John. I need more proof!

I think you'll find that the reference to Sarah is a mistranscription of Hannah

When you visit the Records Office, you'll be able to verify

Sylvia gave you info about the second marriage showing John to be a WIDOWER. And about Hannah's death..............................

Re Keldon - you say "no such place", but it was the old name for Kelvedon:

"In King Richard I’s Curia Regis Rolls we had become Kevleveden then Keldon in the time of Elizabeth I and the name became Kelvedon in the 18th Century."

Thank you all for your replies which are all very useful. I think the John Higgleton who married Sarah Pamplin in 1814 in Kelvedon (no such place as Keldon) see Essex ref 571186/M04228-1 is the same John Higgleton who was born in 1791 and the son of John Higgleton and Elizabeth Eyres. I cannot find any children with Sarah Pamplin and think she may have died shortly asfter marriage. Did John then marry her sister Hannah? Also did this John then marry Susan Green on 30/05/1822 in Kelvedon? I know this couple had at least six children, and maybe seven as Albert fills in the gap between 1835 and 1839.

For Sylvain, a lot of the BMD references state Halstead but this covers all the Colne villages such as White Colne, East Colne, Earls Colne, Wakes Colne, and Colne Engaine so if one wants an exact place of BMD then further investigation is necessary. All these villages but onto one another.
Could this John Higgleton have had three wives:- 1)Sarah; 2) Hannah; 3) Susan/
I must try and find the deaths for Sarah and Hannah Pamplin now!

From a Google search, Kelvedon and Keldon appear to be the same place, and Easterford is part of Kelvedon.

Kelvedon is approx 10 miles SW of Colchester.
Colne Engaine is approx 11 miles NW of Colchester.
Colne Engaine is approx 9 miles north of Kelvedon.

I note that the suggestion is that a John Hingleton (note spelling) son of John Hingleton and Elizabeth Eyres, born Colne Engaine, Essex, derives from one tree on Ancestry, which has, as proof onlt those two records that I've posted above.

I don't know Essex well enough to know whether Colne Engaine is close to Keldon, Keldon or Easterford, which are the places identified with John on other records.

The death for Susan that I posted above is more likely to be correct than the 1854 death registration posted by malyon .............
