Ok, thanks Dea.

Great find Tiggit !

Unfortunately the mention of 'E Herbert' is purely as someone who makes a declaration on a death cert of a totally unconnected person called Arthur William Ballance, a farmer from Suffolk.

All the mentions of Ernest S Sole certainly connect to 'our' Ernest though.

If someone has access to the findmypast website this might be worth checking out (not sure what info is likely to be recorded):

There is an Ernest Samuel Sole listed on the wills and probate section showing that he was a shareholder in the Great Western Railway 1835-1932 (years 1883, 1898, 1904 and 1905).
Also there is an E Herbert recorded as a shareholder in 1928.

In 1911 EHH was timekeeper at an iron foundry - so seems to have changed occupation again between the end of the war and his death.

Philip

Philip Report 28 Jun 2019 15:20

On the marriage it says occupation of father train driver

Philip

Philip Report 28 Jun 2019 14:32

I have looked up the marriage for Cecil Edward Herbert who is the first child of Ernest Herbert Herbert and Beatrice. They marry on the 6th July 1929 at St Pauls Westleigh and the father is named as Ernest Herbert (Deceased). Their last child Fred Herbert was born in 1928 so that narrows the search for the death of Ernest Herbert Herbert.

If you could find his birthday that would be absolutely wonderful !!!

I am so sorry thought was at a dead end with this line of enquiry so not been on to look. Thanks so much for all the work you have been doing on my behalf I feel awful. I have been doing the research as a surprise for my friend so I haven't got any more information and I really doubt my friend does. I will look through your previous posts as I wanted to reply first before looking.
Thanks again

One of the other army records posted previously (not showing on Fold3)
is about the award of medals, and among other squiggles it says:

[A squiggle I can't make out] Recs Preston finds [funds ??] claim for emblems 24/7/24
Address: 25 Royston Street, Liverpool.

No Herberts at that address in 1925 - only Elizabeth Ann Menin and Marietta Josephine Whitfield Menin, who aren't relevant to this puzzle.

Well, I've signed up for Fold3's free trial.

The Pension Record Card is not a lot of help, though. No date of birth, and no NOK info, so we're no further forward.

No - he hasn't read it yet ... :-(

All we actually need is his dob and surely that must appear on his army records or somewhere within his family......

Has Philip read your PM, Dea?

When he thanked us for help on the 18th, he seemed to think he would be able to find army records from EHH's regimental number.
I wonder if he's pursued the Fold3 angle, or is hoping that the MOD will have something not showing online (though the latter is unlikely).

No, you're right, Dea.
I had been aware of Ernest Henry before, but had forgotten.

Dea

Dea Report 22 Jun 2019 13:56

The trouble is that the GRO site give his middle name as Henry and there was an Ernest Henry born in Surrey at the right time who would fit......

Death:
HERBERT, ERNEST HENRY 51
GRO Reference: 1927 D Quarter in RICHMOND Volume 02A Page 617

There could, of course, have been an error on the death reg.........
