Ok Erika thank you, I did look to see if I could find a family with the father Thomas Evans and 2 daughters Eleanor and Martha but couldnt see one. Martha's mother was also a Martha, formally Jones. Got that from Martha's birth certificate.

I will order Eleanors birth certificate just for completion.

ErikaH Report 26 Jun 2019 14:01

If you look at the various censuses, you will see that Martha says she was born in Pembrokeshire, and Ellen in Glamorgan

Doesn't preclude their being sisters, but needs to be taken into consideration

Deborah

Deborah Report 26 Jun 2019 13:57

I didnt realise that, thank you.

Eleanors father form marriage certificate, Thomas Evans-Haulier
Martha's father from marriage certificate, Thomas Evans- Banksman

Bear in mind that it was illegal in those days to marry a deceased spouse's sibling - but it still happened!

You should be able to get a clue from David's marriage certs. The fathers' names and occupations will be recorded.

Just want to say thank you to everyone for helping me with this, and Erika for finding the 1871 census.

I received the marriage certificate for David and Martha, and Martha's birth and death certificate, and she is the one I have been searching for, for ages. That makes her my Great Great Grandmother.

The marriage certificate has David living at Gadlys Road, Aberdare, which is what I was hoping to see.

Both Martha and Eleanors maiden names are Evans, so possibly they were maybe sisters.

Just needing to find David on the 1881 census now and this is complete.

Thank you all again so much for your help.

Still can't find David on the 1881 census. By 1881 first wife Martha was deceased, and in Sept 1881 he married second wife Eleanor.

Any help please would be really appreciated.

Deborah

Deborah Report 18 Jun 2019 08:37

It was 76 Gadlys Road, Aberdare- Thank you.

I will order the marriage certificate for David and Martha as I am hoping it may help me find him in 1881.Martha died June qtr. 1878. He married Eleanor 13th Sep 1881 but the address for both of them just says Clydach Vale.

I have found him in 1871, 1891, and 1901, not sure yet when either David or Eleanor died yet.

At least, with your help, I have now sorted out his first wife Martha, thank you.

I am hoping this is going to be the 1871 census showing my GG Grandparents before my G Grandfather Thomas was born in 1877.

That looks very much like her, thank you very much. Died young !!!

You previously found (in this thread) Thomas living with his Grandparents at age 3, must have been when or shortly after she died.

Yes I am thinking that Thomas's mother was Martha (in fact that is on his birth certificate) and the other 3 siblings belong to Eleanor. However, if I have the correct wives they both had maiden name of Evans. Not impossible as it is a common Welsh surname.

Thank you for the possible death entry, I did find a few for a Martha in Merthyr T, and yours would fit the time frame.

I will order certificates if I have to.

If David was a widower when he married in 1881, the subsequent children can't have the same mother as Thomas.
