Welcome to the boards Felicity.

Sandra may not be looking for replies now. You could click on her name to send her a personal message. I don't expect she will have changed the email address she registered with GR (but you never know), so they will be able to let her know there is a message in the system for her.

You then have to hope she acknowledges your message, either here on the boards or by return of your PM

I have asked myself that question but initially i thought there could only be one Lilian Hession in Lancashire and i was wrong about that which is where i went wrong with the Grundy link so i couldnt possibly say to be sure and i am not sure how we would find out. I did a little research into Blackpool in the early 40s and that is where all the Gi's were stationed. I wonder if she took up with one of them and went to America which is why we are drawing a blank here, long shot but just a guess.

Sandra, you don't think the Lilian Hession in the Blackpool Nursing Home on the 2002 ER is your Lilian? I can't find a death in Blackpool for that lady but if she died after 2005, I don't think it would show on FMP.

sandra Report 20 Aug 2017 16:13

Very true, I can just cannot fathom how she could have left my dad and never sent a card or gift at xmas/birthday and maybe she did the same with her daughter maybe not, we had no knowledge of the half sister from the first marriage. My Grandad met another lady in the mid forties and had two daughters with her and that is all we knew. As soon as i knew about the first marriage i half suspected their maybe a child/children.

I am guessing the lady would be well into her eighties now and i would not know how to trace her but it would be interesting to see what she knew or if she had a photograph.

Sandra- did you not know about your father's half sister? It might be worth trying to trace her- there is a chance that she maintained some sort of contact with Lilian.

I wouldn't judge Lilian by today's standards. Now days many relationships breakdown and parents share custody of their children- but even 40 or 50 years ago it was not easy for women to leave a bad relationship with their children- especially if they had no means to support themselves.

sandra Report 20 Aug 2017 13:11

OMG!! I half suspected that her divorce must not have been finalised and that is why there were two marriages. She not only abandoned my Father, no doubt due to boredom but left a little girl beforehand as well !!!!

I got my grandparents Marriage certificate and my dads birth certificate from Blackpool Registry office as he never had any documents of this kind, was told they had been lost (right lol!)

I am shocked, really i am but most grateful for this information and dreading really who Lilian must have hooked up with next, makes you wonder how many children she did have and abandoned over the years, a sad situation indeed.

If the daughter from her first marriage married surname Chambers, then it looks as though they travelled to Australia in January 1953- intending to stay there permanently.

AustinQ Report 20 Aug 2017 12:13

So she married Thomas twice- once bigamously, and again after her divorce:

Nice find Dea-

A slightly later article in the paper re the bigamy charge:

Lancashire Evening Post - Wednesday 23 October 1935

ALLEGED BIGAMY —?—
Blackpool Bench Send Girl for Trial

Blackpool magistrates to-day committed for trial, at the next Manchester Assizes, Lilian Woolhouse (21), of Talbot-road, Blackpool, on a charge of alleged bigamy. She had appeared on remand and her bail was renewed. Mr. E. C. Lee, senior assistant solicitor to the Blackpool Corporation, prosecuted, and said that the girl was charged on warrant that, at Blackpool on September 28th, she unlawfully married Thomas Hession, her husband. Arnold Ronald Woolhouse, of Thorsby-road, Walkley, Sheffield, then being alive.

In court, the girl when charged, said, I admit that I have committed bigamy. I do not wish to give evidence, or call any witnesses this stage." Arnold Ronald Woolhouse stated that he married the accused at Wadsley Parish Church, Sheffield, on November 28th, 1931. Her name was then Lilian Bradbury. They lived together till September, 1933, and there was a girl of the marriage. Witness added that his wife left him on February 7th, 1934, when she said she was fed up and had obtained a situation at Blackpool. He had not seen her since.

Mary Hession, of Thomas-street, Blackpool, said that on September 28th she was present at St. Kentigern’s Church, Newtondrive. Blackpool, when her brother, Thomas Hession, married the accused in the name of Lilian Bradbury. She (witness) signed the marriage register as a witness. Detective-Sergeant Canning said that when he arrested and charged accused she replied. Yes, I did It for the best.”

Can I ask where you got your father's birth certificate from as a birth certificate would not usually have the mother's age on it?

PS: When i applied for and got my dads birth certificate it stated Lilians age as 21 years old in March 1936 so i just assumed she was a 1915 birth.

Thanks everyone, a bit overwhelmed with what i am seeing and going to find time today to process the information properly. Rootgatherer, the top post is definately them, the child is my dad whose birthday was 12 March in Blackpool so not doubt there. The reason i am onto the Grundy link is that when she abandoned my dad and grandad (supposedly for another man) his identity was never revealed/spoken of, the whole family closed up and it was not spoken of despite my dad asking. There was also zero links with the Bradbury family too which i have always found odd. As i searched for Lilian Hession/Bradbury/Woolhouse the only thing that came up was a marriage in 1943 of Lilian Hession & Douglas Grundy so i assumed it must be her as the name Hession is not that common, seems it was my mistake so back to the drawing board on that one, it is a complete mystery what happened to her and it would seem it continues. Thanks so much for all your help as i am really hitting dead ends everywhere and have been for years. Thanks again. x

Sandra, as has already been pointed out, this is an old thread. I am posting the 1939 for for the Lilian who married Douglas Grundy so it doesn't look like she is 'your Lilian.'
