THE FRIENDS of the late Mrs. ELIZA BUCHANAN are respectfully informed that her Funeral will leave the Adelaide Hospital TOMORROW (Sunday) at 3.30 p.m. for the West Terrace Cemetery.

Hi all thank you for all the info, William Hutchinson Buchanan , worked as an engine driver going on the notes on his death certificate, living last address Pirie St Adelaide. Only noted as William Buchanan on his death certificate. on the West Tce., Cemetery list has him as William H. Buchanan and wife Eliza Buchanan. Police report, when he has his daughter sent to Reformatory School (1874) and to prison for 1 week in 1877) has him as William Hutchinson Buchanan. His records for work has him as William Hutchison. When his son Robert was born (1858) he was working as a joiner ,, of Happy Valley.When his daughter was born he was a joiner, when his son George 91863) was born he was a labourer. On these certificates he was down as William Buchanan no middle name. Also Elizabeth (Eliza) Buchanan was noted on the certificates as formaly Williams. Trove newspapers (1893) have him as William H. Buchanan in funeral notices. I have no idea who his parent were. :-( I can not find any birth for him under that name in Australia. :-( :-(

So I think it is impossible they were one and same.

One of the trees on Ancestry has Eliza cited in court having been called an Irish....

So perhaps that is the angle to follow for both of them

Hi all I don't know what happen to the last message I sent through but it hasn't appeared here.
I was not sure if the marriage of William to Hannah Quinnell was the one I am looking for,(it seems not the right one and that one is still in England in 1861) i had no proof. I do know that my William hutchinson Buchanan is the man buried in the West Tce Cemetery in Adelaide along with his wife Elizebeth (Eliza) nee Williams, as the details from his families are correct. His employment as an engine driver at Goodwood Adelaide notes him as Wiilam Hutchinson Buchanan. The funeral notice has him as William H Buchanan also. The 3 birth certificates I have on his children only state him as William Buchanan but employed as a joiner . Thank you all for your information it has now given me other areas to try and track him down, He is not recorded in the Births or Marriage for South Australia

The child of William and Eliza was sentenced to 14 mths in the Reformatory for being an uncontrollable 14 years old. Also in 1877 the same child Elizabeth Buchanan was sentenced to 7 days hard labor for being involved with other female in setting up a brothel in Adelaide. This child married George James Henry White in 1877.
The police report from state records states the father as William Hutchinson Buchanan.

Have you checked out the Tazmanian records,there are a few Wiliiam Buchanans listed on their site.

He may of course been an early immigrant.
