I have found a Rhoda Barnard (Born 1865 in Gloucestershire according to census) living with grandparents, Thomas & Mary Robert, in 1871 and I think she is a servant in 1881. She then married a William Knight and moved to Atherton in Lancashire. My problem is that I can't seem to find a record of her being born in or around 1865. Any advice gratefully received

	As there weren't any penalties for not registering births until 1875, there may not be a record. Look for a baptism What are you trying to find out?

	According to Findmypast Rhoda's grandparent's surname is Probert rather than Robert. Kath. x

	Take note of the correct name for the grandparents, and then look for a marriage to Barnard. 	This is the only Probert/Barnard marriage I can see - although it is quite a while before Rhoda was born (although not impossible for them to be her parents):- First name(s) CATHERINE Last name PROBERT Marriage quarter 3 Marriage year 1841 Registration month - MarriageFinder™ CATHERINE PROBERT married WILLIAM BARNARD Spouse's last name - District CRICKHOWELL District number - County Breconshire Country Wales Volume 26 Page 384 EDIT - don't think this Catherine Probert can be the daughter of Thomas and Mary Probert as if she was then she wouldn't be enough to be marrying in 1841. 	Zoe did you take the advice of looking for a marriage of her parents Barnard + Robert? (oops, posts were being added as I composed, too!) http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl unfortunately there isn't one however I would say FMP's reading is correct and the grandparents' name is Probert (compare the R in Rhoda and the P in Parker in the same household) searching for Rhoda born in Westbury on Severn reg dist at about the right time I might consider this one Births Jun 1865 Barnett Rhoda Westbury S. 6a 200 the two surnames were commonly muddled so possibly Marriages Dec 1865 ? Barnett Tom Westbury S. 6a 426 ? Probert Elizabeth Westbury S 6a 426 Rudge Margaret Westbury S 6a 426 Thompson Robert Westbury S. 6a 426 edit - and that would fit with the Elizabeth Probert in the 1861 household

	In the 1861 census the grandparents DO have a daughter called Elizabeth, so I would say that is a good possibility Joonie. Kath. x

The only one I can see is in 1841 in Crickhowell, Breconshire, Wales so couldn't be a daughter of Thomas and Mary. She may have not been registered, there were no penalties for not doing so until the 1870's EDIT - well late with this offering, reminds me to refresh before posting, but at least have had the same thoughts as others.
