Erika H,

Many thanks for your help on these two. Death certificates have come back;

Stanley Mead born 27/03/1922 Wales - nails it as him.
Seaman (retired) confirms it.

Died at a, now defunct - in 2023 - nursing home Oakcroft Nursing Home Catford. Usual address Flat 11, Hutchinson House, New Cross, London

Informant - also of same address a grandson. Won't name him as he is likely still alive. Will be doing some cross checking to see if I can link this up.

William Mead declarant was his brother. Obituary in local paper also put in by same brother. So it seems highly likely that he did not marry as you suggested Erika although he is shown as retired security guard so apparently worked.

Thanks

Jude

ErikaH

Thank you.

I have ordered both those certificates (annoying that they aren't available as pdf or digital images).

But if I want to close out on this lot I need to speculate :-)

The Commissioner's wish regarding marital age is quite funny....Stanley would have been 24 by then

ErikaH Report 4 Nov 2025 16:06

As William was in Stoke Park Colony in 1939, I have to say I doubt that he would have married, but the death cert may tell a different story

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 Nov 2025 16:02

The obvious course of action with William is to get a copy of his death cert - or look for a Will.

Poor Stanley may have had other inclinations...........................

??
MEAD, STANLEY 1922
GRO Reference: DOR Q2/2008 in LEWISHAM (2421B) Reg 1B003 Entry Number 500909822

There is an ER record for the name in London SE14 from 2002 to 2008 . The address is in Lewisham

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 4 Nov 2025 15:50

Well progress of sorts....there's a lot to post 8 years later so bear with me please!

To start with Stanley's elder brother George died in 2008. And Stanley would now be 103 if he is still living.

So still trying to find a death for Stanley. All I can say is that I have him from birth to 1940 when he arrives back at the home of his grandmother from Sydney, Australia. Then I lose him until 1945 where he appears on the electoral registers for 7 Dumfries Place from 1945 to 1963 (to 1959 as Stanley A and thereafter as plain Stanley) with the exception of 1946 when he marries Elsie May. Grandmother Mary dies in 1963 and that's the last trace of him.

But a breakthrough today. I had an Ancestry hint for a newspaper article which I couldn't access through Ancestry for free. But I found it on FMP. And here it is word for word.

Published in the Western Mail 14 April 1953

"This husband is no good to anyone. It makes one wonder whether the age level of matrimony is too low and I wish I had the power to disqualify this man from further matrimony" said Mr Commissioner O. Temple-Morris Q.C. granting a decree nisi at Newport Divorce Court yesterday to Elsie May Mead of Commercial Road, Newport against Stanley Mead on the grounds of the husband's incapacity to consumate the marriage. The Commissioner describing the case as "extraordinary, perplexing and somewhat weird" said the couple were married in 1946. There was no kissing during the courtship and only once had the husband kissed the wife during their married life.
"This man and this woman bring the marriage state right down to the gutter; they have made a complete and absolute farce of marriage" commented the Commissioner.
The Commissioner exercised his discretion in favour of the wife who he said in 1947 gave birth to a child by another man.

So there you have it.....and that explains the birth and death of the child at three months old (of gastroenteritis). :-(

One thing sorted.

So two things left to try and sort:

(1) death of Stanley (A or not)

and

(2) New request - can anyone find anything about William? I lose him after 1939 when he was in hospital in Bristol until his death in Newport in 1996. I cannot find a marriage (for certain) and the death certificate is not available as a digital image.

Thanks

Jude

Joonie, as per your post, the child died.....will check what you posted and if she didn't I will delete the details...

JoonieCloonie Report 31 Jan 2015 00:56

[edited out info found when I thought the child had survived]

sad result even though my hunch turned out to be right

I hadn't noticed that post about me posting in the future before (I was stuck on that 8 yr old getting married) ... what did I do ?! I guess it got fixed :-)

edit - it just happened in the Anthony Adolph pinned thread too !

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 30 Jan 2015 22:51

Well the birth 12 November 1947 came back....Margaret Mary, father James Fitzgerald. Mother Elsie Maria Mead formerly Morgan. So I wondered about this - she is May previously and after - but the address is the same as the address when she married Stanley in March 1946. So it seems the marriage lasted less than a year sadly.

So one thing put to bed. Still no further with whether Stanley or his brother George are still alive. But it seems very possible they are (and good luck to them) so won't post further about them!

No it's working now but the three posts that "went awol in the future" are still showing as tomorrow.....

I am sure we could make a fortune out of this somehow...natch wrong way round :-)

Genes grammar needs some addressing ...its' tut tut tut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In case anyone wonders I wanted to be a teacher all my childhood; and when I tried it....well let's just say it wasn't for me. But I am very old school when it comes to spelling and grammar......

what a dog's breakfast ! yes, Genes has announced on the chat board that their clock is ... off :-)

running backwards, more like

now this will keep pushing your post 'Joonie, as per your post' and my reply '[edited out ...' (in reverse order) down the thread, but at least they are sticking together!

... oh, now it's just random ... I will stop posting!

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 30 Jan 2015 18:39

And it's happened again...my first post on page 2 was this afternoon...

I replied to Joonie around 1600 hours (in the pub :-) )

Yet Joonie's answer and mine are dated tomorrow!!!!!!!

Anyway, Joonie, sadly we were both right and the child died shortly after birth (registered Q1 1948)

So sad outcome, but I guess it confirms that Stanley and Elsie's marriage did not last long -backed up by the ER evidence. Maybe next time I am in the library I'll have a look at the address that Elsie gave at her marriage and the birth of the child.

good grief, I was not reading carefully! somebody must have got an 'Ancestry hint' ... name isn't even the same.

I hope that person notices some day and makes Ancestry take it down!

Just double checked the probate for Elsie - it's in her maiden name but the death notice is in her married name.

Just had a look at the comment....it's that an eight year old married in 1955!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The marriage referenced was in West Wales :-(

Stanley A has come off the electoral rolls. Between 1939 and 1940 he was a seaman with P&O

I may have a play with the executor....

There is also a 2011 death in Birmingham; it's an all too common name!

Not the Scotland one in 1994 - Gerald Stanley aged 85
