Charles was born in Sheffield married to Frances Ethel Machon in Nelson Lancs in 1931 and died in Newark on Trent, Leciester in 1959. He was a keen musician, violinst, & sportsman. I am seeking information on his social and employment history. Family gossip has him as a policemen, before marriage, and band master in later years. I know nothing about his parents or siblings.

Though Hannah sometimes has the variant Ann, so I wouldn't completely rule out Mary Hannah Miller.

There were 2 Charles Edward Ackroyds born in West Yorkshire in the April quarter of 1905 - one in Sheffield and one in Halifax.

I think the baptisms above are those for the Halifax boy as I've followed them through to a marriage in 1929 to an Alice Walker.

There most definitely is more than one Charles Edward Ackroyd.


I think the best course of action would be to buy his MARRIAGE certificate, to get the name of his father, otherwise you are likely to be led astray.

Thank you to all those replied. Thank you Cynthia for the how to sheet, I have never been on any message board before. I have requested his birth ,marriage and deaths certificates as suggested, just waiting on post. I also discovered the two Charles born in same period. Believe I am looking for the Sheffield born one but will see. To patchem what a wonderful site. I wish it was my Charles but no. Thanks for the 1911 Census info I'll look into all that.

Just got the marriage certificate in the post. Charles's father was Abraham Ackroyd [deceased] General Carter. Charles residence at time of marriage was 44 Spring Pl Eastbrook Sheffield. Occupation Labourer at industrial steelworks. :-)
