The newspaper article is from the Brooklyn Union, 1883. It basically says that he had fallen into the river from the Battery pier at 7:30 p.m., had been attended by an ambulance surgeon but refused to go to hospital and his friends took him home in a coach. At 11:00 p.m. that night a doctor was called but Edward died before the doctor arrived.

Thanks all for the info.
I have been in touch with the Greenwood cemetery and they have given me the burial plot number and his date of death but the New York Archives could not find a death cert for him so don't know where he died except the cemetery people were able to tell me it was an accidental death. Looks like he had a son also Edward Richard Perks who died aged 3 yrs 29 days and is also buried at Greenwood but I would have to pay to find out more details for him which I may have to consider later.

Thank you for all the directory info and the marriage info. If he was in the US five years before his naturalization you would think that he would be on a census somewhere.

The manslaughter incident sounds like a terrible accident

Edward Perks, a druggist's assistant at Lichfield, has been committed for trial for manslaughter, but bailed in £600, for labelling "Ethiop's mineral" as "Turpeth's," whereby a farmer named Winter came by his death, he having taken it as medicine.
