Sorry Ann - I was trying to establish occupations and the birthplaces stated on the census images as I thought that it would then be easier to identify the correct people on the 1881 English census.

I haven't been much help though except that Dancingqueen can probably eliminate that James as being hers.

Thanks rootgatherer, tht was my next search after checking migration records which of course dont start until 1890, but my system pretty slow. Think that is pretty conclusive evidence that, that is not my samways -as of course they are in UK in 1881, what a shame.

Imprisonment 3 Cal -what does this mean? 3 months/ years? Sorry read it wrong it says 3 calander months hard labour got it.

All I know is that Archibald James Samways was born at Cuttenham, North Newnton, Wiltshire on 23/02/1888 -which was a big house at which his Father was a servant

but by 1891 -Mary Samways and children are living with her parents George and Jane Prince back in Hampshire and James is not in Wiltshire or Hampshire, or it seems in England and Wales.
