I can't find him anywhere. Is it possible that he was in the army and away in the Boer War? This could be a reason why he ended up in the south as it is where some of the troops would come back to after the war (my grandfather did and married in Farnham, Surrey).

This looks like the military record:

Age at enlistment: 17
Birth Parish: York
Birth County: Yorkshire
Document Year: 1898
Regimental Number: 4258

Flip

Flip Report 2 Nov 2012 15:17

OK, have tried to PM you the 3 images which are legible but I'm not sure if they have gone through. You won't find him in 1901 as he was posted to Africa on 28/2/1900 - so presumably to the Boar war.

If the images don't come through PM your e-mail address & I'll send that way.

I guess you have this birth, and as you know John was dischared in 1902 so may (or may not) have been his father before their marriage - who knows??.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 2 Nov 2012 19:33

Hi Flip.

Yes Filmer Lushington Crosoer as above birth we think is John Arthur's child (not got birth cert yet) but he is with them on the 1911 census in Leeds.

Think he was the easiest one to find out od the children.

There's a second record for him, he transferred to reserves on his discharge in 1904. 3 more pages coming through by PM - looks like he was called up for WW1, and has a maintenance order for a child born in 1903!

Flip Report 3 Nov 2012 13:58

Have you found a marriage for Minnie? Image states they have been married 2 years with one child who has died.

added: I'm not convinced either trancription is right - have you looked at the original, it looks more like Best to me. And the marriage in 1908 has him as Charley Best on the image.

 Sue In Yorkshire.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 3 Nov 2012 14:57

Yes it is Best when I magnified the image so have let FMP know a transcription error.they will more than likely look at it and put the surname right in about a month.

The only marriage I have found for Violet is one in 1 Dec qtr 1920.,she would have been 17 to a Richard Atkinson

There another 2 but they are in 1944 and 1950.

Flip

Flip Report 3 Nov 2012 15:19

Are you descended from John Wright? Looks like he had a busy time in 1902 after getting out of the army, fathering (probably) one child born Q2/1903 and then another in Q3. Must have been all that time in Africa. :-D

 Sue In Yorkshire.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 3 Nov 2012 15:36

No I am not a descendant,
I am doing this research for a very close friend of mine and John Arthur Wright is
her mother's great uncle.

My friend wanted to find out about her family as it's quite interresting what info we have found.
I have already done her father's side of the family and she wanted me to have a look at her mother's side. so that is where John Arthur Comes into it.

Yes he must have been a busy little bee.
Think he may have done a runner from Leeds and then come back just before the 1911 Census.

Bet he didn't know about Violet until well after she was born.
