As you say, Fred and Emma married after Annie and Herbert were born, so Fred is Stepfather to them. The birth certs for the children might give the father

thankyou andrew for your help.

The two Marples children must be Emmas' children from before she married Fred.

Fred and Emma then went on to have Janey, Fred and Mary Alice. They must also have had another child who has died..

If you buy the marriage certificate it should tell you whether Emma was a spinster or a widow when she married Fred.

Possible first marriage for Emma, but you would need to the marriage certificate to Fred to confirm her as a widow

There is also a Margret Marples in prison the same time as Fred. She is single aged 35 a charwoman. Perhaps he only spent a little while in prison and Emma filled the form out.

Looking at the original 1911 form it appears to have been filled out by Fred. Either, as Mel says, he was in temporary custody or someone else filled out the form as him.

Doubt we will ever know!!

I did look to see if there was anything such as a court case but think it was probably just a small thing and it looked like a small place as there were only a four people in there at the time. Most of the census was the family of the police constable. What I find strange is that there is no address on this census, at the bottom of the page.

It is classed as and Institution.
