Robert Report 11 Oct 2012 22:49

James Low b. 1841 and brothers Robert and William emigrated to USA about 1870.
James married Mary Kidd (also born in Scotland) in 1874 and then had daughter 1st Nov 1879 in Paterson NJ.

William last heard of in Chigaco 1880 working in meat, date of birth approx. 1843.

Trying to chase up James and William as we don't know what happened to them. Only recently discovered letters sent from them and kept by my grandmother Jane Keith Rennie ms Low.

Robert b.1845 to 1928 we have found in Texas and also living relatives, yippee.

bob mitchell :-) :-)

Was his father's name Charles and mother Nellie ?

Robert

Robert Report 11 Oct 2012 23:36

Yes, Nellie is short for Isabella which was her full name ms. "Grant".

Yes this is indeed Robert.

I had not realised that he had a son as well as a daughter, well done Catherine for picking it out. James married a Mary in Manhattan - there is some mention in the ten letters that have been kept.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 12 Oct 2012 00:07

Have found the following 1870 census and now I'm not convinced that the 1880 census, plus the births and deaths posted for James and Mary & their children are correct:

1870 United States Federal Census
Name: James Low
Age in 1870: 19
Birth Year: abt 1851
Birthplace: Scotland
Home in 1870: Paterson Ward 8, Passaic, New Jersey
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Paterson
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members:
Name Age
Jane Low 46
James Low 19
Margret Low 17

I'm sure this is the James that is in the 1880 and whose family records have been posted but I'm guessing it 's his mother he's with and her name is Jane, whereas Robert states his James' mother was Isabella.

Also, this one in New Jersey is 10 years younger.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 12 Oct 2012 00:08

Robert - where have you got the information from about James' marriage and birth of daughter? Has it been verified?

Robert

Robert Report 12 Oct 2012 00:09

Wow, I sit looking at the computer screen thinking of the sadness that my relatives experienced in the new world.

William was lodged in a "beer store" in Chigaco while working for a meat factory (Libby's) in 1882.

Their mother died in 1884 in Forfar.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 12 Oct 2012 00:12

Robert - don't get too upset about your relatives hardship, I'm not sure that they're your relatives. See my last posts.

Robert

Robert Report 12 Oct 2012 00:14

It was through a letter that William sent back to his wife, but only that he (James) was marrying another Mary.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 12 Oct 2012 00:16

Robert, what do you mean by "another Mary"?

Where did you get the info that he'd had a daughter in New Jersey?

Robert

Robert Report 12 Oct 2012 00:29

James Low was born in Forfar in June 1841 - I have his birth certificate for this from "ScotlandsPeople".

Absolutely amazing coincidence and the people there was a Jane Low and a Margret Low and James in the family too.

Jane Ann Low ms. Keith was my Great Grandmother.

Thanks for the help its getting a bit late now
