my great grandfather was jewish and changed his surname. I can't find out anything about him as I don't know his first surname. Does anyone know what else I could do. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

A copy of his marriage certificate hopefully should name his father whose surname hopefully will not have been changed.

Is his first name reasonably unusual? By finding him on the census with his second surname, then searching on a site such as Ancestry ( not Genes unfortunately) it is possible to enter the first name, together with the year of birth and the place of birth. This will bring up a long list of possibilities but if you know that you are looking for a jewish surname, it might be a long shot, but one worth trying. -jl

If he changed his name officially then you may be able to find information.

A guide on how to research..

But bear in mind that you can always change your name, without going through any legal process, as long as it isn't for illegal purposes

Good luck
