Can anyone spot a marriage between Jane Johnson and Mr Charlton?

Thank you

Peter

Peter Report 7 Oct 2012 18:35

Oh wow this is confusing ... sorry, I meant Thomas Charlton born c. 1831, who appears on the 1841 ... where is he in 1851?

I am not sure if that is him above!

But the Johnson connection is interesting although it is not close to where the family came from!

Peter, do you mean the Thomas Charlton in the 1841 I posted - aged 10 so born 1831?

Flip

Flip Report 7 Oct 2012 14:11

Where have you plucked Thomas from? There are a number showing on 1851 census - who do you think his parents are, and where do you think he was born?

Peter

Peter Report 7 Oct 2012 14:02

Right, I am not sure about John and Elizabeth but can I ask for a look-up for Thomas Charlton born 1840?! Does he show on 1851?!

Ah thank you also Flip. This is a great find.

Thanks,

Peter

You're welcome Peter, I only questioned Williams death because of the occupation in 1851 - now I see he was a shoemaker in 1841, so it all ties in, and I had thought John Miller was connected as Mary getting married to William Miller.

Only two Jane Charltons of right age coming up in 1841; given her parents' names I would guess the first but is it in the right area of Yorkshire?

Can I ask for a census look-up for:

1) Erected in memory of John Johnson, who died May 9th 1852, aged 76 years.
ALSO Elizabeth, wife of the above, who died ...[ illegible ]...1852, aged 78 years.

2) Sacred to the memory of Jane Charlton, daughter of Thomas and James Johnson of Crakehall, who died March [ illegible ] 1848, age 68 years .... [ there is more but it is illegible ]

Thank you!

Peter

Peter Report 7 Oct 2012 12:05

Also, a cousin?

Erected in memory of John Johnson, who died May 9th 1852, aged 76 years.
ALSO Elizabeth, wife of the above, who died ...[ illegible ]...1852, aged 78 years.

Peter

Peter Report 7 Oct 2012 12:03

Wow that is a fantastic find! Thank you so much Flip! I am astounded at that. Now, I don't have William's probabte (and his death on my records is taken as an estimate, two days before his burial). William Johnson was mentioned in my his brother-in-law, William Miller's will from 1844, who is the father of John Miller of Newby Wiske. This is fascinating.

Also thank you for the link! That is amazing.

Also, I noticed this and wonder if this relates to Jane Johnson, born 1780:

Sacred to the memory of Jane Charlton, daughter of Thomas and James Johnson of Crakehall, who died March [ illegible ] 1848, age 68 years .... [ there is more but it is illegible ]

What do you think?

Than you again.

Flip

Flip Report 7 Oct 2012 06:54

Are you sure you have the right death for William - the probate relating to the death was proved at York on 3/6/1859 and states he was a shoemaker of Crakehall. Executors of the will were Christopher Deighton (canon of Crakehall, a butcher) and John Miller of Newby Wiske (County farm bailiff).

There is no probate record for Esther that I can see.

Flip Report 7 Oct 2012 06:10

Erected in memory of William Johnson of this place, who departed this life April 18th 1859, aged 76 years.
Blessed are they who die in the Lord, from henceforth. Yea saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them.
ALSO Esther, wife of the above, who departed this life March 18th 1861, aged 80 years.
Her end was peace.

The site also has other indexes of Crakehall which may be of some use in your research.

This is the only likely Thomas I could see in 1851 but not certain it's him. Richmond isn't too far from Bedale:-

Ah that makes things a little tricky - is there no sign of Thomas Johnson?!

Peter.

I would think all of the females would be married by the 1841 census so not sure how you will find them without actually looking at the parish records.
