I am looking for information on a Mary O'Neil who lived at 12, Brickfield Lane, Holmfield, Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1926. She was a Worsted Spinner at this time.

I think she married in 1931 to a John Waudby.

I really want to find out more about her, where she was born etc and parents.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Sandra

Welcome to the boards Sandra.
How sure are you of the marriage? If you believe it is your relative you might need to get the cert.
You can also check for matches with other members by using 'search all trees' in search box above right.
Have you checked electoral register for the address to see if by any chance she was living with her family? bear in mind only men over 21 and women over 30 would be recorded at this time.

I cannot see a death for Mary L Waudby, but there is this marriage:
Mary L Waudby
Spouse Surname: Ratcliffe
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1978
Registration district: Hull
Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding
Volume Number: 7
Page Number: 1186

Added;
Just seen a birth for a Mary L born 1954, so probably ignore this marriage.

Is the address in 1926, where she was living when she gave birth, or just a known address?
I have found a death in 2002 for someone born in 1914. which would make her very young in 1926. (In Essex)
Sorry, I am just guessing what is going on.

What is your connection to Mary please Sandra?

Do have any other info at all about her such as the names/ages of any brothers or sisters which might help us to identify her?

Your not sure about the 1931 marriage. Got a sneaky feeling that it was Mary Louisa O'Neil who married John Waudby..... seem to have moved to the Mansfield area.

What about the 1938 marriage in Halifax to Mr Pickles?? It would be more likely as that is the area closest to her.

Did Mary arrive from Ireland?

Sculcoates is a fair distance from Holmfield as well.

PM sent to Sandra to advise how to find her thread.

I have my Father's birth certificate Joseph Henry O'Neil, born 10th October 1926 which states Mary Lilian O'Neil as his mother. At this time her residence is stated as 12, Brickfield lane, Holmfield Halifax.

I know nothing else about her. My father was brought up by his 'Auntie Kathleen' who I understand might have been his auntie. I can trace her from marriage in 1934.

Interested to find out where Mary Lilian went?

The details of Kathleen Frances Balmer are interesting, these are the first details I have of her Father's name James. Kathleen spoke with a Yorkshire accent. Did Kathleen have a sister Mary Lilian who was my Father Joseph's mother?

My father did not know his mother (Mary Lilian O'Neil) and yes the birth was registered late. No details of his Father are mentioned at all.

I think you need to get the marriage certificates of, first, Kathleen, if this is definitely her marriage. You can then see that James is down as father, and the witnesses and addresses and professions.

Then, as Kathleen married in Halifax, have you considered that the Waudby marriage is wrong and that Mary Lilian married Mr Pickles in Halifax in 1938?
If so, then this marriage certificate would give father's name to help confirm it.
It would also help with ages.

I have been trying to find Mary Lilian and Kathleen together in 1911, but no luck so far.

John Thomas O'Neil also looks a possible as a brother to Kathleen - did your father mention any other family members?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 1 Oct 2012 20:15

as we do not seem to be able to find the family in 1911 or any birth reg in England is it possible they lived in Ireland and did not move her until after 1911

the trees on ancestry for aKathleen Frances O'Neil seem to have an exact birth date but no birthplace (or father) recorded

Eringobragh1916 Report 1 Oct 2012 20:40

Sandra ..Do you know for certain that the marriage found for Kathleen was correct as there is another for a Kathleen O'Neill to a Reg. Waddington. March Quarter 1921 Halifax...
Given the date of the O'Neil/ Bamber marriage 1931 it does raise the question of who was caring for Joseph in the intervening years 1926-1931

Unknown Report 2 Oct 2012 13:44

Thank you all.

I do know that the marriage for Kathleen is correct. I also now think that the Waudby marriage is wrong and that Mary Lilian married Mr Pickles in 1938.

I will obtain these Marriage Certificates to move this forward.

My father did not mention any other family members, a sensitive subject he has chosen to forget.

I have no idea who looked after Joseph in the intervening years 1926 -1931.

The possibility of them living in Ireland prior to 1911 is another way forward.
