Find Ancestors

I am trying to trace the ancestors of my maternal grandfather supposedly born in PORTFIELD SUSSEX O2 FEB 1892. The NATIONAL RECORDS cannot find any record of him being born . any help would be appreciated. he was married under that name in 1919 ,and won 3 medals in WW1 in that name. He died 01 sept 1974

Can't find a birth in that name at that time. Is it possible that he was born before his parent's marriage and was registered in his mother's maiden name?

George WD's miliatary records state that father is George R,and brothers Fredk,Arthur and Herbert..73,Victoria Road.Portfield.

He was discharged from Army ,having been convicted for fraudently obtaining postage stamps,before enrollment in Army. Hope he is the wrong one!

Edi: A tree at Ancestry has Joseph as George' step father, maybe Martha had George out of marriage to another man?

thank you everyone. i had got his marriage certificate and it states his father as joseph bridger.and witness e bridger, i guess that was ethel . i looked on the 1911 census and it states george as bridger aged 19
on the 1901 census he is listed as george farndell. age9 i have tried birth certifcates for both george bridger and george farndell but the records office have no record of him

i also found his mother martha farndell born in 1864 and on the 1891 census aged 26 as a servant in the barnes household. .

Oh George, that info would have saved us so much time!
