I recall meeting a Gladys or Gwladys Stanley Laidler at an event at the Library Theatre in Manchester around 1956, to celebrate the opening of some new facility there. She was in the company of the comedian/ singer Harry Secombe. Both were billed as a celebrities for this event. Its not a name you forget easily, but at the time I had never heard of her. I understood that she was an actress or literary figure of some standing. |

As has been clearly illustrated, two Gladys Cotterills were born in Birmingham in 1896 |

The 1911 census of the Gladys born in Birmingham but living within the Cannock Registration District indicates that her father's name was John, not William. It does not show a second name for Gladys. |

I GOT HER MIDDLE NAME FROM THE 1911 CENS, WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE CORRECT AS IT MENTIONS HER BROTHERS WHICH HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED FROM MY RELATIVES. THE W IN GWLADYS I BELIEVE WAS ADDED AT A LATER DATE AS IT BECAME HER STAGE NAME. HER PARENTS I HAVE AS FLORENCE AND WILLIAM. MY RELATIVES DO REMEMBER A BABY BEING BORN, AND THOUGHT THE GWLADYS MOTHER CARED FOR THE BABY AS GWLADY STRUGGLED WITH IT'S CONDITION AS THEY SPEAK ABOUT IT. |

Her second marriage...still doesn't suggest that her second name was AMELIA..........and certainly no 'w' in her first name |
