Old Report 6 Sep 2012 09:36

Sarah was born 25 May 1832 in Sudbury, Suffolk to Joseph Nicholls and his wife Sophia Smith.

She married Samuel Neave in 1849 in Sudbury - his second wife (First wife Eliza died 1848)

She had several children, including Alice Mary Nicholls Neave born 10 March 1874 in Sudbury.

Alice moved to Australia when 9. There is a note in the family book of the Wilson, Neave and Clark families of Kangaroo Island -"Alice Nichollas Neave, after the death of her mother, Alice arrived from England on her own aged 9 years. She married a Kangaroo Islander, John Wright and immigrated to Zion City, Illinois, in the United States of America to follow their religion. "Followers of God". they had 13 children"

I have been unable to trace the death of Sarah Neave (born Nicholls) other than a death in 1903. This death appears in most family trees.

Would appreciate if you could trace her death prior to 1883.

As a secondary query - On the 1881 Census, Sarah is a widow and Head of the family. She is shown with 2 children Samuel and Alice, and a grandson William aged 8. Who were his parents?

Thanks in advance

Arthur

Can't find a death for her. I recently read an extract from a vicar's journal written in the mid 1800s, in it he mentioned a large number of bodies that were buried without being identified, e.g. unknown elderly man found drowned in river, etc. etc.

It made me wonder if that's why we often can't find death records for some of our ancestors.

Do not think that Sarah's son Frederick William is the father of William.

He had a son Frederick William, but he is shown at home with his father on the 1881 Census and is only 3

On the 1881 Census, someone has posted Alternate Information for William ........ showing his name to be William Ernest Neave

This is the reason posted .................

William Ernest Neave rather than William Neave
Although unconfirmed, I think this is Sarah's son and not her grandson as transcribed.

One tree on ancestry (Owner: gruntfuttock) has William Ernest Neave as the son of Samuel Neave and Sarah Nicholls.

It would seem that you might ahve to buy the birth certificate in order to prove whether this is true or not.

I've looked on familysearch, and cannot see a baptism.

Can't see him after 1881.

Could be Harriet's son. There's a death for a Harriet in 1875 but the age is a little off.

no, I can't find him after the 1881, nor does he seem to be an entry on any of the family trees.

I did wonder if Sarah had maybe re-married after Samuel died .................. but can't find anything for that either!

I've been googling like mad!!!

Rose

I do not think Sarah travelled with Alice to Australia.- there is a comment somewhere that the sons were saving to bring there mother to Australia, but she died before it could happen.

This is the extract from the family book on Kangaroo Island -

this was out of the family book, it was all the information we have on alice.

Alice Nichollas Neave, after the death of her mother, Alice arrived from England on her own aged 9 years. she married a Kangaroo Islander, John Wright and immigrated to Zion City, Illinois, in the United States of America to follow their religion. "Followers of God". they had 13 children. John Wright's brother, Herbert married to Lucy Ellen Willson the daughter of Alice's sister, Kate. this, in reality, made Alice's niece (Lucy Wright) also her sister-in-law. at the time of their mother's death, the Neave boys were saving money to assist her to join them in Australia.

I think William is probably Sarah's son, not grandson. Fortunately it doesn't appear to be a common error on the Census.
