Reuben Hughes

My great Grandfather, Reuben Hughes, is proving to be a bit of an enigma. We can't find any mention of him prior to the 1871 census, where he was lodging with his future in-laws in Madeley, Shrops. His date of birth depends on which census viewed (1845 - 1852!), but we think it's around the latter half of 1851. Apparently born in Dudley, Staffs, he married Isabella York in 1873 (age on certificate 21) and went to live in Pendlebury, Salford, Lancs, where he was a coal miner. He died in 1895, age given as 44. His father is Thomas Hughes and his mother may be Mary, but not certain on that.

If anyone can shed any light on Reuben, it will be very much appreciated, as we can't get any further back on this branch of the tree.

Thanks,

Lynne

I think I've found Jan's 1861 Reuben married to an Alice in the 1881 ....

Lynne Report 2 Sep 2012 17:05

*Father's occupation from marriage certificate: Thomas Hughes - miner

*I have come across that 1861 census entry several times, but it's not 'our' Reuben.

Putting together several things, we are concluding Reuben may have been born June - Nov 1851.

*Marriage certificate states date as 1st June 1873, bachelor aged 21. Wife - Isabella York.
Death certificate dated Nov 1895 age 44yrs.

Thanks for replies.

I'm stumped too. I don't suppose the witnesses to the marriage hold any clues?

I did say Reuben is proving to be a bit of an enigma! ;-)

Marriage witnesses are the brides' maternal aunt Mary Elizabeth Corfield and someone called Daniel Jones. The common surnames don't help the search!

I already have Reuben tracked from:

1871 census in Madeley lodging with future in-laws.
1873 marriage to Isabella York.
1881 in Pendlebury, Lancs with wife, son (my grandfather) and younger daughter.
1891 census with wife and younger daughter.
1895 death.

It's prior to 1871 that I can find no mention of him whatsoever.
