Have you done a google search for Johannesburg newspapers? They will have contact details and very likely have some kind of archives.
There is also the national archives - they seems to have a lot of stuff and you can contact them also - try here:

Yes that is all I have got Jan, but if he did end up in South Africa, anyone got any ideas on how I can track him down?

I think he was born in Dorset Gins.

However, I am thinking Jennifer is trying to find out about his life, rather than his Ancestry?

Been trying to track down this ancestor of my Husband. we believe he joined the Merchant Navy and that he ended up in south Africa as a music Critic on a news paper in Johannesburg. I have been unable to find anything to verify any of this ...any one got and suggestions
