Sorry I was not clear, Helene's name do you believe "Octavie" is a middle name or part of her family name/surname?

Thank you for your help.

Do you have access to French records to trace Helen's parents?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 29 Aug 2012 16:05

Ocatvie is almost certainly a second forename............English version Octavia

I can confirm that Octavie is a christian name of latin origin.

If you are looking for a copy of her birth certificate then you should know that they do not exist in France.

What you need to ask for is :-

(une copie intégrale ou un extrait avec filiation d'une Acte de naissance.)

To get a copy you need to make the demand to the Mairie (Town Hall) where the person was born.
In France this is free of charge and the copy will usually give you lots more info than you get in England so a great source of info for your research if you can get hold of a copy.
It will give the name of her father and his occupation and his age and place of birth, and they sometimes give his parents names and places of birth.
The same for her mother.
However, you do need to be a direct descendant of the person to be able to order a copy.

From another source:-

BARAT, Helene Octavie b: Feb. 29 1906 in Le Raincy Seine & Oise France d: March 30, 1983 in 186 Oak St. Abingdon Co Oxford

Mairie
121 av Résistance
93340 RAINCY (LE)
Itinéraire
01 43 02 42 00

(for your information, this place is now in Seine Saint Denis and not Seine and Oise)

for an Acte de naissance less than 100 yrs old you can make a demand on line but for the others the demand must be made to the Mairie.

If you don't speak french would you like me to do it for you?
I would be more than willing to give them a ring for you tomorrow to see if they can find anything?

Thank you all for the fantastic response.

Helene is my husbands great grandmother, and appears to be a mystery in the family, very little appears to be know of her. I am aware Helens mother remarried to be renhart, but that is it as regards to what information I have.

Catherine, are you sure you do not mind ringing - that is a big cost to you. Could I reimburse you for this?

Thank you again.

Hi Julie,
Sorry, had to leave to get the dinner ready.
No I don't mind ringing as I live in France. Le Raincy is on the East side of Paris and I live on the West side so not a million miles away.
As her birth date is noted on the death record, then it shouldn't be too difficult for them to track it down as long as she was born in Le Raincy.
Anyway, I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know what happens.
Regards
Catherine

Morning Julie,
Have contacted the Town Hall and they have asked me to send my request by post or e-mail, which I have done.
Just have to wait now to see what turns up. Don't know how long it will take all depends on how busy they are.
Will let you know as soon as I hear anything.
Regards
Catherine

Catherine Report 3 Sep 2012 13:56

Hi Julie,
Just received the birth record from Le Raincy.

Father's name is Octave Barat aged 29yrs
(makes date of birth abt.1877)
Occupation:- Manouvrier (this is someone who works with his hands doing jobs on a daily bases)
Child born:- at home.
Address:- 19 Allée des Espalier, Le Raincy
Time of birth:- 2:30 in the morning
Date:- 26th February 1906
Birth was registered:- 26th February 1906 at 3:00pm
Mother's name:- Gabrielle ( possibly Victoria but more likey) Victorise or Victorine PETARD.
She is also noted as being his wife so the child is noted as being Legitimate.
Mother's age:- 20yrs
(makes date of birth abt. 1886)
Occupation: Housewife
...............................................................................................................................................

Also noted on the doucument are the details of the marriage of Héléne Octavie BARAT

Married at :- Herstal, Belgium
Date:- 8th October 1927
Spouse: ARKWRIGHT Charles Richard
Underneath there is also noted:- Le Raincy 17 December 1930 and is signed The Mayor.

(In France when you are born the birth is registered at the Town Hall of the town where the birth took place. When the person marries you have to notify the Town Hall where the birth was registered so that the date and place of the marriage can be noted on the birth record. The same thing when the person dies, so this is probably the date of which the Town Hall was notified of the marriage.)
