William Allen born 1884 South Shields went to Canada between 1901 and 1909 .I have a document stating he was in the R.C.M.R. and in 1909 was promoted to corporal number 1821. I would love to know what happened to him.

Reggie - Royal Canadian Mounted Pifles, eh - not how I'ld have said it - are you getting confused with the 1909 police force (the R.N.W.M.P.)?

Shelagh - do you know Wm's exact d.o.b.?
William Allen's not exactly a rare name, and you can search 1911 by month of birth on Ancestry.
Without a sub, you won't get full details, but you would get something like this June 1884 guy:

Name Parent or Spouse Names Home in 1911(Sub-District, District, Province) Birth Year Birthplace Relation View Image
William Allen Moosejaw, Saskatchewan 1884 England info

Assuming Ancestry & AG have transcribed him the same way, you can find him at:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/index.jsp

1911 Census of Canada

He immig 1906 - farm addy=S11 T15 R24 (W2M)

Since it's one of the prairie provinces (AB, SK, MB), he could be on the prairie 1906 census (Nominal census days were 24/6/06, 1/6/11, 1/6/16 - 1871-1901 were within a day of UK census day)
You can search 1906 on AG. (Year switch at top right)

For prairie rural addy's, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Land_Survey and use http://maps.google.com/ and
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/post-offices/index-e.html
A look up of Moose Jaw PO gets Sec.32, Twp.16, R.26, W2 - 1907-04-29
The township measures northing from the US border (in 6 mile steps), and the range measures the westing (usually) from the last meridian line (again in 6 m steps) - here the 2nd meridian = longitude 102 deg W - it's on the SK side of the SK-MB border (at least it is down south), abt 4 m E of Esterhazy SK.
So we need to go a bit S and a bit more E of Moose Jaw.
Drinkwater PO Sec.29, Twp.15, R.23, W2 - 1902-05-20
So Wm's 5 m W and 1 m S of Drinkwater in 1911.

Course I don't know if this is your Wm!!!

Since your guy had military experience, try

I got 126 hits, but a d.o.b would help weed them out.
You can check his attestation form - quite likely to list a UK rellie as his n.o.k.

Hi,so much to take in,thank you so much. Sorry about the Pifles! I have an original document stamped Oct 19 1909 to certify 1821 Private W Allen R.C.M.R.
passed his exams to become corporal at Winnipeg Manitoba. I have just found his exact d.o.b: 31 Aug 1883 South Shields.
I will check out 1911 Canadian census and immigration records.

Hi Sheila, do you have the date of arrival in St John's - I'll see if I can find the outgoing record to see if it gives an address in England.

EDIT: If it's the departure 12 March 1907 then I found it - doesn't unfortunately have any details other than W Allen, occupation carter
