Thanks for all replies. I have all the info regarding his death etc. and his death cert gives his age as 66 too. I am very interested in the Canterbury christening of 16 July 1775 as have never found this one and it would only put his age a year out which is good for those days. Regards Anne

The Late Captain Brew

A few friends of this gentleman having raised a subscription for the purpose of erecting a memorial to his memory, a stone has been placed on his grave, which bears the following inscription engraved thereon :- "This token of remembrance was erected by a few friends to the memory of William Brew, late Captain and Adjutant of the Royal West Middlesex Militia, who died September 14th 1842 ; - aged 67 years; "Who knew his Worth ! - Admired his Talent !! - Respect his Memory !!! - And regret his Death !!!!"

Sorry can't post the URL, it's too long for the page but there's lots of info if you google "william brew" west middlesex militia.

Have you read this?

Sounds like your William Brew, Timothy Carter was living with him on the 41 census.

If the date of birth that you have is from the 1841 census remember that ages on that census for those over 15 was rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0. I presume that William gave his age as 65 meaning that he was 65-69 making him born 1772-1776.

I am trying to find where William was born in 1776. In the 1841 Census it shows that he was not born in Hillingdon, Middlesex as he marked the relevant box with a N. He died in 1842 and spent all his life as a soldier, latterly in the West Middlesex Militia. Any help at all would be wonderful as this is my brick wall!
Thanks, Anne Brew
