Thank you Sylvia and Reggie, I did send for the birth certificate but like you said the father didn't match up. I've traced a lot of my fathers side of the family but it wasn't until I read an article about the female genome running through daughters that I would have liked to know who my great grandmothers were, unfortunately I don't think I ever will...you are so kind though for your help

I think you have to get that birth certificate ....... you can order it through the Lancashire bmd site.

I've tried to find it on freebmd, but there are several Martha Taylors born in the Manchester. Didsbury was not a Registration District, and I cannot find which district it would have fallen into,

I wonder if she told porkies when she married??

There are 5 Public Family Trees on ancestry for Martha and Frederick Montague

NONE has succeeded in finding her parents.

It is not unknown for illegitimate children to make up a name, or use the name of a grandfather, cousin or other "known" person on their marriage certificate ............. it looks better for the other family

but it makes it really difficult for US!!!

I've been looking, and I cannot see a birth registration that really looks good, other than the one found by Reggis

Like Reggie ........... I suggest that you start by buying that certificate, and see what information you can get from it.

Thank you those who took the trouble to look up; Martha Ellen was my great grandma,I found her marriage certificate, that's how I knew her father's name. I found her on the 91 and 01 census but not on the earlier ones that would link her with the name of her father. Frustrating as I'm keen to trace my female line now that I've got a grandaughter. Once again thanks
