Wondering if anyone can help! I am trying to find a date of birth and/or date of death for my Grandfather John Barton. The information I have so far is: he was married to Margaret Ann Maidstone on 8 June 1907 at the Wesleyan Centenary Chapel, Dover, Kent. I have the marriage certificate which shows he was 26 and his father was William. At the time he was a Corporal in 'The Buffs', stationed at the Citadel Barracks in Dover, Kent. I think he was born in Kent as this seems to be where most of the family are from. In 1914 his son Arthur was born at Shorncliffe Camp, Sandgate, Kent and by this time he was Sergeant in 'The Buffs'. I have checked the 1881 census and 1891 census. There are 2 that could be possibilities but both have the same name father, William! I haven't found him on the 1901 or 1911 census. As I am also not sure of his date of death or where he died, I am struggling with this one! I have tried to find military records but not having much luck with that either! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi jax

Thanks very much for your help, I really appreciate it.

That date of death could be right but not sure about the 1901 census as the regiment is not the right one...he was definitely a corporal and then a sergeant in 'The Buffs'.

Thanks again

Ann :-)

That's brilliant jax, thanks very much. If he was 18 & 4 months when he joined up in September 1899 then his date of birth would be May 1881. You mention that 'there are 4 images available for this soldier' does that mean that there are photos of him or just the records? I have tried to access the National Archives with his name and number but don't seem to be able to find him....what I am doing wrong!!!!

Ann

Ann Report 10 Aug 2012 06:54

The 1891 census has him with a different wife?? And his military record has him born in Gravesend but you found a birth in June in Dartford??

jax

jax Report 10 Aug 2012 06:57

That was from Find my past the Images are discription of him like hieght build tattoos No photos....I have trouble sending them I'm affraid

That birth seems about the right time but would have thought he would have been registered in Malling but I cannot see anything

on his military records he was born 'Kingsdown', Gravesend - think this was probably Kingsdown, Dartford

Sorry, but I'm a bit confused!

His military attestation showed the address of 1 Hackney Road, Maidstone, the same as the 1901 census, which states his mother as Rachel born 1836, but the 1881 census has his mother as Anne born 1845.

Ann

Ann Report 10 Aug 2012 07:37

gotta love it when they marry twice!!!

jax

jax Report 10 Aug 2012 07:37

His mother was not Rachel...his mother was Ann

The 1901 census does not include him as he was in the Army but that was the address he gave
