Thanks all again for your considerable efforts. The information I have received is from a distant relative who has a comprehensive tree and his crosses with mine. He says he got the info from the GRO(S), so I thought that it would be available. If anyone else can help I would appreciate it greatly.

I've viewed the Death Certificate. The Parents details are non existent. That's not uncommon. His Wife, who reported the death signed with a cross. Also not uncommon. I've done a broad search for his birth in the OPR's and found none in the Midlothian area. Two in Fife and Several on the West Coast. Sorry can't be of more help.

I got the death details from his death certificate but the parent's details were indistinct on the digital copy I have.

The marriage certificate pre 1855 (parish register) probably won't give any names other than the couple getting married. Of course you may strike lucky and have other names on it, but this is doubtful.

However, the death certificate would be the one to get especially as you know when and where he died. As Tempest has said, this should have the name of his parents on (if known).

Btw, how do you know exactly when and where he died?

William's death cert "should" have his parents names on as he died in Scotland.

For his baptism etc there are parish records on scotlandspeople which are searchable and viewable online, you'll need to buy credits as unfortunately it doesn't offer subscriptions, that may help with records prior to 1855

however if you find his death cert on that site too Scottish records for marriage and death usually give the names of both parents (if known), plus the certs are viewable online

I suggest you get some credits on ScotlandsPeople and buy William's death certificate. This will give you a lot of information including names of parents.

My William had a son James, born 02.04.1845, and he married Mary Corner on 15 Aug 1873 at 4 Richie Place, Edinburgh. They had a son, James Corner Cains in 1880, and he married Catherine Brown in 1903. If anyone can tell me who the father and mother of William was I would be grateful.
