Hi I'm trying to find my grandfather born 1894/5 named Edward charman (possibly rice). He married my nan Annie emery in 1940 and died in 1961. On his marriage cert to my nan it says his father was called William charman who was a labourer. It also says he was a widower so was married before my nan. My father says he thinks he recalls a mention of a name change from rice but have nothing to go on. My father also thinks his dad had a brother called James. We also think he was in the Hampshire regiment... If this rings any bells would love to hear from you.

Find him on 1901 and 1911 census and it should give you his birthplace and parents

As you have probably discovered, the 2 births with no middle name, die before 1901:
Births Mar 1894
Charman Edward St. Giles 1b 639
Births Dec 1897
Charman Edward W. Ham 4a 18

Deaths Dec 1897
Charman Edward 0 W. Ham 4a 9
Deaths Sep 1898
Charman Edward 4 St. Giles 1b 410

There are no births in Hampshire for Charman or Rice, and no-one obvious in the censuses.

If on the marriage certificate his father's name is William Charman, then all the family would have changed their name.

Do you think he was born in Hampshire, or any possibility of another area?
Thank-you

His name may have changed from Rice to Charman if his mother remarried.

FreeBMD has only 8 marriages between Rice and Charman and most of these are in Sussex.

I have a Charman on the fringe of my tree, a relative by marriage , not by blood.
I found that it was a very common name in the Sussex/Brighton/Steyning area. There's someone here on Genes with a huge amount of Charmans on their tree. Try searching trees, you may be lucky.
