Well I have found that the name Cockayne exists in Nottinghamshire. Variations include Cockings, Cooking, Caking. There is a Cocking in Lincolnshire. Thinking of the strong accents from the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas, no wonder that the name has so many variants.

How certain are you that she was born in Handley, Notts? Boundary changes not withstanding, Handley is in Derbyshire, sort of in the direction of Clay Cross and on into Chesterfield.

Trawling FreeBMD for all Frances Mary born between March 1858 and December 1865 in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. Nothing even remotely similar surname.

Same search for Frances with no Mary having to split up into quarters so taking forever. FreeBMD is now telling me 'Service not available' so I suspect I have asked for too much.

Tracy, if you're using Internet Explorer 8 it adds all that white space. To stop it, on the right of the website address bar there is a little icon that looks like a torn piece of paper (the compatibility mode icon) click it so it turns blue. Click it on any other tabs you have open.

You should then find that when you copy and paste between sites that the white space has gone.

If that fails then download a better browser!

Until 1875, there were no penalties for not registering births

It may be that her birth was simply not recorded
