If they are giving different fathers on their marriage information, perhaps they were both illegitimate and just invented the names?

It was very kind of you to trawl through Westoning for me - that was on my 'to do' list for today.

Thomas Scott's marriage is on-line and his father was John so possibly not a brother after all, although I have known John and James to be interchangeable.

I think I'll just have to put that one down as not found, although it's comforting to know that it's not just me that can't find them.

Many thanks for your help

I've looked through all the 1841 census pages for Westoning. And they just don't seem to be living there anymore. There's only 16 pages to look through, and the Enumerator's Book for the discrict (District 14) says it's for the "entire parish of Westoning".

Yes, I had assumed that the original must have been difficult to read and probably said 21 rather than 27

This is the Thomas that I found in 1871, makes him the right sort of age to be William's brother.

Name: Thomas Scott
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary Scott
Gender: Male
Where born: Westoning, Bedfordshire, England
Civil parish: St Saviour
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England
Registration district: York
Sub-registration district: Walmgate
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Household schedule number: 54
Piece: 4750
Folio: 133
Page Number: 10
Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas Scott 38
Mary Scott 35
Robt Scott 10
Mary Scott 9
Alice Scott 5 Months
Ann Scott 11

But I can't find him in 41 and 51 either, it would be odd if the family managed to get missed off 2 censuses.

Oh yes, I can see her now on the 1841 and 1851. Definitely born around 1834. I wonder why the marriage says 27. Maybe it's in very poor condition and has been misread.

The Thomas Scott I found stayed living in Bedfordshire.

Still no sign of William on the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

I have the birth certificate of their daughter Mary Hannah, 1854 York, parents William Scott and Catharine Scott formerly Bradley.

The 1853 York marriage is the only one in the country between people with those names from Sept 1837 until 1853 and beyond so I'm pretty sure it is them. On the marriage record he is 25 and she is 27, but on all the census records she is younger than him by between 3 and 9 years, his age does vary quite a lot on the census returns, he ages by 14 years between 1881 and 1891.

I don't know if Thomas is related to William but it would be quite a coincidence if 2 people of the same name from the same village turned up in York - I wonder if the whole family moved North.

Do you know that the marriage is definitely them? Only the ages are a long way out. And William is consistent with his age on every census.

The full marriage certificate might say whether the father is alive or dead, and might have a family member as a witness.

For information:
'"WESTONING, a parish in the hundred of Manshead, county Beds, 4 miles south of Ampthill, and 8 from Dunstable. '

I notice there's a Thomas Scott on the 1871 census b.1833 Westoning. He also disapears from the 1851 and 1841 censuses. (so far). Do you know if he is related to William?

Thank you for looking Moira, it is his family and I have all those records, it's just in 1841 and 1851 that I can't find.

I think that the only extra information to be gleaned from his marriage certificate would be his father's occupation - which knowing this lot is likely to be Ag Lab!

I am struggling to find William in the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

1861
Name: William Scott
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Catherine Scott
Gender: Male
Where born: Winsgheng, Norfolk, England
[Westoning, Bedfordshire, England]

Civil parish: Lazenby
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Registration district: Northallerton
Sub-registration district: Northallerton
ED, institution, or vessel: 26
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 3
Piece: 3663
Folio: 70
Page Number: 16
Household Members:
Name Age
William Scott 30
Catherine Scott 27
Mary Scott 7
Thomas Scott 5
Ann Scott 1

He married Catherine Bradley in 1853 in York and according to the record on FamilySearch his father's name was James and he was 25 at the time of his marriage.

I have him on all the other censuses through to 1911 and his birthplace is always Westoning, Bedfordshire,

Many thanks to anyone prepared to give this one a try.
