Leonard Report 10 Jul 2012 20:09

hello can someone please do a medal index card or medal rolll look up for me ( i have lost my copy ) its for a Richard Roberts,
Trimmer, 5818TS, RNR, HMTrawler Merse. Died, aged, 37, on 22 May 1917 .

one of the reasons im as asking is i was looking richard up on a website for holyhead cenotaph ( which i contributed some info and a pic of him ) the site owner has said that he was awarded the 14 star ,
so i was curious and went to find my record for richard and its gone so need a look up done to confirm if hes awarded the 14 star so i can try and find out what a naval man was doing to earn it ( as far as i was aware he was naval reserve )
so any help would be most useful

I dont know if this helps or not.

I checked out the record of the person named above him, his transcript does not include the Star medal.
But i can see what you mean, the st could belong to either not being inline

les Report 11 Jul 2012 14:07

The Royal Naval Reserve in both world wars were professional sailors from the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets.called up for the duration of hostilities (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve were civilians). The main function of HM Trawlers was minesweeping, manned by fishermen as the two activities were similar.

The two services were amalgamated into the modern RNR

PS the peacetime crew usually stayed with the ship so he may been a fisherman before the war.
