Would anyone be so kind as to look up James Armstrong and Ann in the 1871 census. They are living in Shropshire, possibly Wellington.
I am trying to find his age so that I might narrow down his Death record.
Her maiden name was Edwards.I think he was born in Scotland around 1813.
He is alive at the time of his son,s marriage 1874.I think he had died by the 1881 census.
Are there any children living with them?
Would be very grateful for some help.

Thanks Ann,
His son that got married in 1874 was a Samuel. It is a second marriage the one to Ann Edward/Edwards so I was wondering if there were any more children born to James.
Maybe it was a mistake on the son's marriage certificate , maybe they missed out the word "Deceased". If there is no entry on the 1871census then maybe he died before the census. He married her in 1861
Thanks for trying.

Have you found Samuel on the 1871?

Have you found ANY of the family in 1871?

Is it possible that Annie married again, and they are showing under another surname?

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 8 Jul 2012 11:32

I forgot to ask.... Was Samuel from the marriage of James with his 1st wife, or is Annie his mother.?
The 1861 census is clearly written... AGE 27yrs
She definitely seems to be too young to be the mother of the older siblings?

Thanks Anne,Sylvia and Prickly Holly.
No I haven't found any of the family in 1871 .I would have expected the younger ones to be still with their father as Samuel doesn't marry until 1874.
Isaac the 2nd youngest brother goes to live with him in Gateshead. Co. Durham. and is there on the 1881 census.
All the children on the 1861 are from the first marriage .The Mother Hannah died in 1860.
If James had died before 1871 and Ann remarried then I wouldn't have a clue where to look, except she comes from Pride Hill Shropshire James married Ann in 1861 January 22nd in Shrewsbury Parish church of St. Mary's. She is defintiely 27 years old in 1871. He is listed as coming from( presumably working in) Wellington.
If you can't find a James and Ann on the 1871 census then I think that is the end of the road.
Has anyone any other suggestions?
Thanks for trying

Thanks Ann,
Although the death age is a bit out I shall look into it further. He claimed to be 42 on his second wedding in 1861Making his birth 1819, I had him as being born in 1813, so more work is needed. Interesting to see her marrying again. I shall investigate further.
Thanks for all your interest.

The children MUST be somewhere on the 1871!

That was why I asked if you had found any of them

if she could have married again, especially before 1871 ...... the younger ones might be showing under Annie's new name.

BigOomsonaBoat

BigOomsonaBoat Report 9 Jul 2012 06:25

Yes I agree Sylvia, but people do go missing on censuses.
Ann has found a possible marriage for her in 1880, so I will go off and look for them on that census. She is probably too old at 46 to have any children with him but she may have had with James before he died --she was only 27 when she married.
The first family are aged between 31 and 24 so most would have left home before the 1871 census. Although Isaac is 21 and Samuel 19 I know they don't marry until 1880's and 1874 and that was after they moved to Gareshead C.Durham.
I am quite amazed at where this thead has taken me .Thanks again.

Oops!! Ann's marriage is incorrect if the info on FamilySearch.org is correct. She was not born in 1960 nor was her Father Samuel. She was a widow and her Father was Richard Edwards.
