Hi, I have found direct Irish ancxestors but can't find them in Ireland. i only have information from a scottish census.

Andrew McFadyen c.1847 - 1914 married to Mary Currens then to Susan McGreechan c.1847-1887 1871 scottish census has them living in New Monklands showing Andrew as head aged 24yrs born Ireland.

According to his death certificate, his father was called William and mother Agnes McCracken. William died in 1869 in New Monklands

Can anyone tell me where to search to find further details.

Thanks

Denise,
This is the family on the 1861 and 1871 return.
Martha b 1842 and Andrew b 1847 are the ONLY Irish born children in the family.
The next one named Agnes was born in Lanarkshire circa 1851
which means they moved from Ireland to Scotland between 1847 and circa 1851.
I cannot locate an Irish McFadyen/McCracken marriage or the births of their Irish born children

EDIT.
This should mean that Agnes McFadyen ms McCracken died in Lanarkshire sometime after the birth of her youngest child Ann McFadyen b 1854 .
Hopefully she died in 1855, death records from that year hold a wealth of info, including place of birth!

It could be that he married again but your best bet is to check Scotlands People

Or, it could be that Nancy/Agnes are the same person :-S

Catherine

Catherine Report 2 Jul 2012 18:45

Sorry deleted my posting by mistake:-

I thought Andrew"s mother was Agnes?

Gin's 1851 shows mother as Nancy, so does that mean that William married twice?

Nancy is of course another form of Agnes so you're right, they could very well be the same person.

You hold off that delete button Catherine ;-)

Hi Catherine,
It took me time to work this out too!

Andrew was the son of William McFadyen and Agnes/Nancy McCracAAnneken
His mother Agnes/Nancy must have died between 1854 and 1861
His father William died in1869

It was Andew bc 1845 who married twice
1st marriage ( circa 1866) to Mary Currens was short and as a widower, he and his children with Mary appear on the 1871 return.
By 1881 he has remarried ( circa 1872) to Susan and the additional kids are from this marriage

Hi Anne, Catherine and Gins

Thanks for your help. Yes nancy is another name for Agnes so you are definitely right there.

Again thanks everyone for your invaluable help as I couldn't have gotten further back without you. I shall add your additional information to my family tree.

I think I have been looking Agnes instead of nancy thats why i haven't found anything.

Just had a look for Doummaul in Ireland but it doesn't exist? DO you think it could be Donegal?

Might be best to obtain a copy of the 1851 census and try to read the birthplace for yourself.
