I am having difficulties locating William Prytherch who was born about 1720 in I believe Llandeilo'r Fan. I believe that he had a brother Daniel Prytherch.
My connection is that William Prytherch had a few children and one of the children was Roderick Williams born 1750 in Llandeilo'r Fan and he married Elizabeth Evans.
Am I right that back then people used to instead of using the correct surname, they used to use the first name of the parent as the surname. As Roderick Williams should be Roderick Prytherch.

which name are you tracing back? presumably :Prydderch.

Surely if Roderick had used the surname williams, he'd have gone through life with it?

How are you attaching Roderick Williams to William Prydderch if their surnames are not the same?

Please explain your train of thought..........

Hi Susan, I posted a marriage and deaths in Llandeilo Fawr in Carmathenshire earlier and then deleted as it's a totally different place to Landeilo'r Fan.

There are a lot of public trees available on A* with the family showing as Martin describes.

In Wales, the patronymic naming system was used, in the case of my own family, up to the end of the 18th century.

My 3 x great-grandfather, b 1778, was Morgan Edward, son of Edward William who was son of William Morgan. Originally this would have been Morgan ap Edward, ap meaning "son of". So Martin is probably correct in his assumption that Roderick WIlliam was the son of William Prydderch.
During his lifetime, Morgan Edward became known as Morgan Edward William and his children all had the surname William(s).

The use of "ap" was dropped but survives in surnames such as Bevan (ap Evan), Pugh (ap Hugh), Powell (ap Howell), Bowen (ap Owen)

You have listed as I believed that Roderick's father was William Prytherch/Prydderch.
Do you mind me asking, how did you researched this? and what does the letters and numbers after the name mean (AFN: 2TDD-NN8)

I went to the churches at Myddfai and Llandeilo's fan and found a number of gravestones with the surname of Prytherch on them.
