I am looking for information on the following fellow, James (son of James of Kendal, England).

The Mercury, Tuesday 10 July 1900
Marriages.
CAPSTICK-DUTHIE.-On June 8, at the Collins-street Congregational Church, Melbourne, by the Rev. Dr. Bevan, James, eldest son of James Capstick, Kendal, England, to G. E. M. (Nurse Duthie, Hobart), eldest daughter of the late W. Vincent Duthie of Ballarat.

He died in 1937 aged 75 in Victoria. Gertrude was born 1864 and died in 1938; I don't think they had any children. (I have the DUTHIE ancestors sorted for now, just looking for info on James please) :-)

Was he previously married? When did he come to Australia? Who were his parents?

Thanks, Vera.

The James jnr in the 1871 looks good for the eldest son of James of Kendal.

I agree the other Jas as butcher with Agnes seems to be the first 1881 I posted...so still need to find 'my' Jas jnr in 1881.

Will have another look.

No luck - does seem to fit as the butcher one - unless he was already in Australia by 1881?

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 24 May 2012 09:01

A different tack - is there a James CAPSTICK snr in Kendal in 1901 (given Jas jnr married in 1900 in Australia and it stated his father was there at the time!)

I guess born c1835 +/- 10yrs.

???

Vera2010

Vera2010 Report 25 May 2012 08:31

I thought perhaps he had headed for Australia between 1871 and 1881 but can't find anything on him travelling out although there was one moving from New Zealand to Melbourne in 1887 but no record from UK to NZ.

I can only find 3 likely James born at that time in that area but then he may have been born elsewhere and the press record just showing where his father was living at the time of marriage.

I'll take a look for James Snr.

Vera2010 Report 25 May 2012 09:07

Forgot I looked at James Snr and family previously. Elizabeth died im 1884 and James Snr re-married Matilda Wheeler. In 1891 he was living with Matilda, Florence M (Frances M) and Walter S. In 1901 he is with Matilda and the son of that marriage.

I've just noticed that in 1861 James Snr appears to be lodging in Kendal and next door is an E Capstick with wife Fanny. E Capstick born same place as James Snr and is a Butcher. Wonder when he married Elizabeth ? and had James Jnr.

Bearing in mind the daughters name, I think this may be the christening of the James Capstick married to Dinah Leather on that 1881 census - states he was born Heversham which is a couple of miles from Milnthorpe:

Looks like Susannah had 2 other children - Isabella ch Milnthorpe 23/2/1857 and Edward born 1863, ch Kendal 1/6/1869. They are on the 1871 census as Capstick, but Susannah going by the name Smith.

She then married Horatio Duty in 1873 & was on the 1881 census in Kirkby Kendal.

Think, if the christening for James is correct he can be ruled out?

Vera2010 Report 27 May 2012 09:29

Cherilyn

ha ha your confused. I confuse myself all the time on here. I was leaning more towards your original 1881 of the James who was working as a Butcher in the 1881 census with the Speight family. Only because there was that tenuous link to the Capstick's and butchering/butchery in the 1861 census of James Snr and next door neighbour E Capstick (possibly James Snr's brother)

Of the 3 Capstick's I could find - one married Dinah and as Jax posted was still in UK in 1901, one appeared to have married and settled in Liverpool. So possibly James 1881 with the Speights is linked to the 1881/1871 family James Snr b Yorkshire - Tailor/Draper and Elizabeth. However still can't be certain because no place of birth for the James Jnr.who married in Melbourne. Do you have his marriage cert?

Vera

Flip

Flip Report 27 May 2012 10:32

Think Vera may be on to something. 1861 has James snr living next to Edward & Fanny - this is probably their marriage:

Then, the christening of their son James:

Flip

Flip Report 27 May 2012 10:57

So the butcher James Capstick settled in Liverpool could be Edward's son, and the James Capstick born Heversham/Milnthorpe can be ruled out as well I think it only leaves the other James son of James & Elizabeth and registered Q1/1862. (The other 2 christened before this, and no sign of christening for this one.)

Wonder where he was in 1881 - can only see the other 2?? Or then again it could be this one:

I can't see the one above on any future census, nor a death prior to 1901 to match him. Think he must be a stong contender for your James, I'd be inclined to order the birth certificate.

Cherilyn

oh well done Flip, he does look a good match, need to have a good think about this one!
lol Vera, it is difficult when so many names the same - and there i was thinking Capstick wasn't a common name!!!

Flip

Flip Report 28 May 2012 07:12

Thanks Cherilyn. I think the occupation may proove a clue - lots of wool in NZ & Australia! Familysearch NZ collection has a J Capstick going back & forth between NZ & Aus, but he could just be crew and there isn't enough details to know if it's him.

Maybe someone with better access to shipping records could find him sometime between 1881/1891? Or maybe coming back to UK at some point.
