Thanks Dea, sorry I don't know what his trade was as I haven't got any certs yet. He was in Victoria by 1859.

Also thinking that the John who died in 1868 aged 24 would have been too young to be marrying Maria in 1859 (unless you are saying he is a different one altogether?)

Hmm interesting I will look into this...my theory on young Alfred was that Maria had him after Chas' death but used her husband's name to legitimise the birth.

What started me on this line of research was this marriage notice:

MARRIAGES.
DUTHIE - REVILL. -On March 12, at "Para Station," River Darling, by the Rev. H. M. Laverty, Howard Alexander, only son of the late William Vincent Duthie, of Ballarat, to Elizabeth Marion*, youngest daughter of the late John Charles Revill, of Melbourne.


Now the only possible I could find was Elizabeth Matilda to John Chas & Maria C. (CHN: Catherine Jane b. 1860, John Chas b. 1862, Elizabeth Matilda b 1864). So she was the youngest daughter at the time of his death, as Chas, in 1864 aged 31, b. Nott, parents not named. His death notice above states there were 3 young children at the time.

Then Maria's remarriage showing her as relict of John Chas, and nee Kibble, also fits neatly. Also note the link to Para Station, mentioned in Maria's daughter's 1901 death notice! (i.e. Elizabeth married at her stepfather's station).

Unfortunately, I cannot see Elizabeth as either Matilda or Marion anywhere as she always is shown as Elizabeth M! (She died in WA in 1908, even her headstone in Leonora shows her as Elizabeth M! Their stillborn child died at the same time. I have the Duthie details.) But wouldn't be the first time the papers got a name wrong!

Just noticed on Digger Pioneer disc, that in 1868 there was a birth of a son Alfred born Collingwood, he died Fitzroy at 5 wks of age.

Seeing that you have a death notice of a Charles Revill 1864, could this be the wrong person, and that John died in Tasmania?

It was unusual for a young widow to remain single for 10 years, with young children, especially if she had no means of support.

Hi thanks for your work here so far...have most of Maria's bits (except her death). Still a mystery as yes I think that Maria was the wife of Hopton who was in NSW in 1880s.

The Harper marriage is intruiging - but surely that is not Maria snr? Assuming she was born c1835 she can't have been re-marrying in the 1940s! Perhaps Marie and Maria are different people. ???


Still hoping to find something on [John] Chas REVILL -1851 census maybe?
