Elizabeth,

There was no census in 1922.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 10 May 2012 19:36

Elizabeth, there is no 1922 census. However, it looks like Jonesey has added her marriage info.

If you got copies of the certificates it may give you some further clues.

There was a census 1921 but this will not be available until 2021. So you mean you just do not know where she was? There is no way to know apart from relevant marriage/birth/death certs in between the census returns. If these provide an address, it can be searched on the electoral registers, but will only show people of voting age.

Elizabeth,

At the time of the 1921 census Lottie would be almost 4 years old and may indeed appear on the census record. As Jan has advised however this will not be available to the public until at least 2021 unless there is a change in the law.

Apart from school registers the earliest "Official" document she is likely to appear on would be an election roll in 1938. Unfortunately from that year onwards and for the duration of WW2 no electoral registers were compiled so the 1944 marriage certificate will probably be the only one to be able to give you a clue as to where she was living at the time.

Both the death of Sarah (Mother) and the birth of Joan was in the same quarter....maybe Sarah died in childbirth.

Oh oh indeed Prickles (hope you are well). It's always sad when you find stories like this. When researching my hubby's family (for my daughters) I found that his maternal grandfather had been married before he married his grandmother. On paper they had had three sons (two of them twins) who were aged under six when wife number one died...at the same time as a baby daughter died. So putting the proverbial two and two together...she died in childbirth and the child died too..leaving him with three boys under six. When he remarried and had a second family there has been - to my knowledge - no mention of family number one. So I can only assume that he gave them up to his first wife's family as he could not cope on his own. So, Elizabeth, you have to understand that in those times - it ties in with the same time of my story - that a man left with a child after his wife died would probably have no way of keeping the child. There was no social security in those days so he had to earn a living and he couldn't do both :-(

I hope all is well with you too. :-)
