Hi,
I haven't needed help for a while, but, i have been given some info and need advice !!!!!
Benjamin POWELL was born 17th Sept 1831, and died in 1839, buried July 19th 1839, i have been told, i think by Parish Register info his death was a "violent death" and it led to a trial.
Parents of Benjamin were - Moses POWELL and Leah (nee Jenkins)
The area Benjamin lived was Defynnog - Breconshire.
Any info would be great.
Many thanks
Sally

Think I've found a newspaper article, hang on while I transcribe!

HEREFORD JOURNAL, Wednesday 24 July 1873

On the 18th instant, an inquest was held before Henry Maybery, Esq. Coroner, on view of the body of a lad eight years of age, at Devynnock, Breconshire under peculiarly distressing circumstances. It appears from the evidence that Benjamin Powell, the deceased, on Sunday the 30th June, was in company with several boys, two of whom gave evidence on the violent abuse which the unfortunate lad received from the other boys; and a verdict of manslaughter was returned against William Jones, Benjamin Williams and William Price: as the whole matter will be investigated before Baron Gurney, at the approaching assizes, we abstain from commenting further than the deceased died 17th inst. and from medical testimony, wholly in consequence of violent external abuse.

How awful.

Will send the page.

EDIT: The same newspaper on Wednesday 7th August briefly states that the three boys were acquitted.

Marie, why is that newspaper article dated 1873 when the case was 1839?

Edited my spelling ;-)

Gins - because my fingers got confused when they were typing. It should, of course, say 1839.

PS - it was an article.

A BIG thank you to all who helped with the info,
MC AND GINS, thanks for taking the trouble to send bits from the case.
I have been ill over Easter - Great !!!!! but have ordered the death cert for poor Benjamin, think it may make very sad reading.
I wonder if any mention would be made about his funeral in the paper.

Sally

you could try contacting the Local Study Centre, or local library, where Benjamin was killed and ask if they have any newspapers of the period that carry any articles.

Give them the time period ......

...say 2 weeks from the date of the death

then 2 weeks from the date of the coroner's inquest

and 2 weeks from the date of the trial(s)

I had fantastic success getting the newspaper report of my gt grandfather's death ....... and the Local Study Centre did not charge for anything, even the cost of airmail.

Hi all,
Just to say the post has been and i have the death cert for Benjamin.
There is NO cause of death, could this be because of the violet nature of the death??? Never seen a death cert - cause before.
Regards
Sally
