I am trying to trace my mother's ancestors. Daniel Thomas lived in or near St Davids, I was told he was a carpenter, he married Martha Bowen, I was told they were farmers. The story is that they eloped to Swansea to get married and they had I believe 4 sons, Daniel, John, Sam and Tom and possibly a daughter called Martha. The family eventually moved to Newport in South Wales. The son Daniel, is my grandfather and he married Alice Williams in Swansea, the had a daughter Dorothy, my mother, and sons Daniel and William.

Any information would be wonderful, thank you.

How much of the info you have posted has been passed by word of mouth?

Do you have any documentary evidence to back up any of it.......apart from the 1911 marriage?

Thank you everyone for coming back so quickly and trying so hard. It is very difficult when you are the last in line, like me, as there is no one else to ask.

I know the name was Martha Bowen, my mother gave me the name, but also they had a marriage certificate for them. Unfortunately it disappeared when my father died and I have not been able to trace it.

The only actual birth I can confirm is my mother, Dorothy, she was born in june 1912.

My grandfather Daniel, Daniel and Martha's son, died about 1953/4 as my grandmother came to live with us when I was 12.

My grandmother Alice Thomas died about 1970.

I have looked on FBMD and pulled up 4 possibole Martha Bowens1 born in Carmarthen, 11a 645, one in Narbeth 11a 637, and two in Haverfordwest 11a 682 and 11a 72. Sadly because I was always told they were from St Davids I don't know if any of these are her, hence giving as much detail as I could.

Reggie - althouth the Alice Williams and Thomas Daniel looked hopeful, I don't think my grandfather was Thomas Daniel as he had a brother Tom Thomas.

I did find Daniel Thomas through Ancestry, not now a member, but there were two Daniel Thomases and they lived in the same street and had children of the same names so it was all a bit confusing and I didn't manage to sort it out.

Rambling Rose - Samual Thomas would have to be older than 8 as he was my mother's uncle and she was born in 1912.

Thanks again everyone.

Thank you Gwyn, it does sound quite hopeful but I know that my great grandmother was Martha Bowen, I estimate her birth would have been about 1891. Problem is it's all word of mouth. Thanks for the information.

But I thought your mother was born in 1912....? and Martha was her grandmother ?

EDIT
Do you know registration area of where Alice died?
If that was after 1969, then her date of birth and birthplace should show on the death certificate, if it was known to the informant.
Perhaps we could work back from her dates.

Sorry Gwyn, I have even got myself confused. Yes Martha was my geatgrandmother and I estimate her birth date to be around 1874, she was married to Daniel Thomas, there son Daniel, estimated death date1954 at age 60, he was married to Alice Williams, birth date around 1888 and her death about 1970. There children, my mother Dorothy Thomas born 1912 and she had 2 brothers, Daniel and William.

Hope that helps and doesn't confuse you more.

Have you tried looking yourself on freebmd for the marriage?

You may have more luck than the rest of us, who haven't been able to find one.

Word of mouth can be incredibly unreliable - memory plays tricks

Have you considered buying the cert of the1911 marriage (which I posted earlier) to verify the name of Alice's father-in-law

With such common names, it is vital to have as much accurate info as possible - even the death years you quote are only estimates

If, as you say, Daniel was 60 in 1954, that would mean that when he married he was only 16/17 years old. Does that seem likely?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 31 Mar 2012 23:55

Having re-read your post (18:56) - you have completely misunderstood the record I posted .

The marriage is of Daniel Thomas and Alice Williams....look at it on freebmd yourself

I'm afraid that unless you get the 1911 marriage cert, there really isn't anything anyone can do to help you.

You can't do accurate research based on hearsay and supposition.
