Thanks for your help MarieCeleste.

My friend said the story was Alfred was adopted after his father died in a factory explosion. Perhaps it was just his sisters who were adopted after their mother died.

At first I thought this might have been Mary's death, given that Emma was used on one of the birth records above. But the death date doesn't tie in with a child born Dec 1891 and Frank saying he was a widower in 1900. Will still leave here, even if for elimination.

Thanks MarieCeleste. I think that clears up the confusion.

He must have 2 sisters but who knows what their names were?

Rose

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 13 Mar 2012 19:42

Think this might be the answer to the birthdate confusion - I think someone may have told him his sister's birthdate was his!

Indiana Births, 1880-1920
Name: Jacobs
Father: Frank
Mother: Emma Shulmire << just to confuse things!
County: Boone
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 23 May 1889 <<
Reference: Boone County, Indiana
Index to Birth Records 1882 - 1920 Inclusive Volume I Letters A - K Inclusive
Book: R-25
Page: 25

this is the other one:

Indiana Births, 1880-1920
Name: Jacobs
Father: Frank
Mother: Mary Schulmyer
County: Boone
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 15 Dec 1891
Reference: Boone County, Indiana Index to Birth Records 1882 - 1920 Inclusive Volume I Letters A - K Inclusive
Book: R-25
Page: 44

Might be understandable how confusion arose if they didn't record first names.

Also share Rose's concern about varying birth dates - think there's a few loose ends to tidy up.

Where does the middle name of Sanders come from - it's not on the marriage record?

Meanwhile, here's some further info from that WW1 draft registration, in case it's relevant later:

The draft registration was dated 5 June 1917 and at that time he was living at 149 Casper Street, Detroit, MI. He had a wife and 1 child (neither named). His employer was the Michigan Dodge Bus Manufacturing Co (can't make out the town, but it's in Michigan).

He wanted exemption on the grounds of dependants (doesn't say if it was granted).

He was of medium height and build, had blue eyes, brown hair and wasn't bald.

** The other thing is that on the marriage record the mother's name is Mary Willson, whereas on that birth record the surname is Shulmire. Perhaps she married twice?

I'm also concerned there are 2 birth dates listed: 20 Jan 1888 and 23 May 1889

Who is the mother for the child born 23 May 1889?

Thanks.

I can see 2 other female Indiana births with the Jacobs surname and Shul*mire for the MMN. Are there any more details available? Trying to figure out when Mary died.

Thanks,

Rose

That's great.

Doesn't look like he was adopted at birth then. Perhaps the Wishmire's took him in as he is living with them in 1910, and that's where the "adoption" story came from.
