I am trying to find the parents of William ANDERSON who was born circa 1781. William married Parthenia ROBINSON in 1817 at St Mary The Virgin Prestwich Lancashire and I found the family in the 1841 at Bank Top BOLTON Sharples Lancs. It states William as not born in country ? but also states Parthenia was not either but in all the later census's she is born in LANCASHIRE.

Thanks

Pat

Is this the marriage?

This is from Lancashire Online Parish Clerks Project .......

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

Marriage: 5 Oct 1817 St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire, England
William Anderson - (X), of Oldham
Perannia Robinson - (X), of Oldham
Witness: Thomas Whitehead; Thos Grimshaw
Married by Banns by: Jno. Fallowfield
Register: Marriages 1809 - 1819, Page 440, Entry 2206
Source: LDS Film 2356185

Unfortunately there are 14 William Anderson's born in Lancashire on the lancs-opc site between 1775 and 1815

Sylvia

Yes you are spot on. Thomas Haddock marries daughter Elizabeth and she dies in 1885 and he remarries.

Thanks

Pat - Re: " It states William as not born in country"

It normally states not born in county, rather than country.

Not born in county on the original - my mistake. This is a great help.

Very confusing with Lancashire and Yorkshire borders changing I think too. I found searching that I had to check both counties. Being married at Prestwich seems interesting as it looks like it is a far bit away. It says they were both from Oldham so that makes sense with the wedding but census entries later on have Parthenia (her name changes constantly) as being born at Barnoldswick which is sometimes listed in Lancashire and others in Yorkshire.

Just for interest .........................

St Mary the Virgin in Prestwich was the Parish Church for Oldham.

In 1817, there was only a small daughter chapel in Oldham, and so everyone had to go to Prestwich for all baptisms, marriages and burials.

My gt gt grandparents were married at St Mary's in 1835, even though by then there was a full church in Oldham ................. many people still preferred going to the "proper" church in Prestwich for marriages and even baptisms!

It was a pretty long walk ........... and for this reason, often only the bridal couple would make it. Thus, you will often find that the witnesses named in the Parish Register are actually "professional witnesses" ..... men of the parish (verger, sidesmen, even gravedigger) who were paid a small amount of money to witness marriages.

In my case, the copy I have of my gt gt grandparents' marriage has 8 marriages showing ........ 6 of them have the same 2 witnesses!

Not helpful if you are hoping that the witnesses will provide further clues to your family!!

As another little side issue ............... St Mary the Virgin has often been used in "churchy" scenes in the soap Coronation Street :-D

Pat - not really related to your query, but some sites let you click on Lancs, then scroll down to West Riding, hold the control key down and click on that - only LAN and WRY will be searched on. FreeBMD is such a site.

I also find this technique handy in my email reader, for deleting non-contiguous junk mail from my inbox.

The family search site has the image of original parish record available free, and Sylvia is right about the witnesses - they appear on a number of other marriages on the page!

Can't see any sign of a birth for her though, sorry.

Barnoldswick baptisms are not held on lan-opc but they are in the Lancashire record office. You could try phoning them to see if they will do a free quick look for a baptism for you. If not I will not be going this week but next time I go there I can have a look for you.

this is probably not what you are expecting!

I looked at the registers for Barnoldswick and I could only find 1 Perthenia in the right timescale. It was a very faint film so the staff checked the original

baptism 7th March 1798 Perthenia daughter of John WATTERWORTH of Barnoldswick, labourer and his wife Ellen

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Apr 2012 20:55

so ... did Perthenia Watterworth marry someone called Robinson before 1817???
