Hi all. Thomas Farrer married Mary Winster on 15 Jan 1825 at St Johns Preston, this is as far back as I can find. I really need your help please in finding the parents of these two. Thank You.

Lokks like you found me Marys parents but Catherine, your find for Thomas s birth of 1776 seems a little to early as that would have made him 51 when he married,think we need to search for a thomas s birth around 1795-1804. Have no idea where he was born only that he married at Preston.

The 1841 census has children William and Jane on it. Jane has the middle name Winster. Thomas is a weaver born in county married to Mary. His age is 65 so I think you are looking for the birth of this Thomas. He maybe didn't marry till later in life but his wife was younger than him. It is not that unusual.

Who is your direct ancestor - i.e. which child of Thomas and Mary ?
Never assume someone's age from when they married.

The Parish Register entry for the marriage as showing on familysearch, indicates that both Thomas and Mary were Single when they married

This is what the 1841 Census says (as posted a couple of tiems on this thread!)-

Ages of people over the age of 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census


This means that someone showing as age 65 could actually be between 65 and 69 ........... thus born between 1772 and 1776


and someone age 40 was between age 40 and 44 .......... born between 1797 and 1801


It seems to me that the 1776 birth for Thomas found by Catherine is quite possibly the one you want.


Many people didn't marry until much later ............ he may have been responsible for elderly parents for example.

another possibility is that the Thomas shown on the 1841 census is Mary's father-in-law and husband Thomas died between 1836 & 1841. Relationships are not shown in 1841
