Thanks Kevin, yes I do have all those births. It's before 1908 that I'm struggling with. I have seen the National Fairground Archive website and plan to go to visit there in the next few weeks.

Lot of births all over Yorkshire and Derbyshire between 1912 and 1930
Whiting, mothers maiden name Bishton.

The marriage certificate gives his fathers occupation as Engineer and hers as a Traveller. It also gives John Ernest's occupation as Engineer. Their address was given as Fairground, Darnall (Sheffield)

You did'nt tell us what the occupation of his father was on the marriage cert.

I think there are a couple of websites for travelling families but I don't know what they are I am afraid.

Someone on GR will though.

There are also Absent Voters lists too.

They were a travelling family Mel, and yes he was a Roundabout Proprieter, but he married into a travelling family too. I'm beginning to wonder if it was the Bishtons that were travellers, rather than the Whitings?

I have found a Whiting family who were travellers, but can't connect them to my lot (well it's my hubby's family really) !!

When I've got time I'm going to go to Sheffield, they have archives there of travelling families, see if that will turn up anything. Don't hold out much hope though because other members of the family have been and not found anything.

Interesting occupation for Jon on the 1911.

Thanks everyone, I do have all that information, but not convinced that any of it is my John Ernest Whiting. I do have his death record in 1946 and have just sent for the certificate (he was 66). I have a copy of his marriage certificate, it gives his fathers name as John.

To recap. The only census I can find him on is 1911 where he is living in Sheffield with his wife Mary Ellen (Bishton). I have found her on all census records upto then, but can't find him.

I have found a John Whiting born in Deptford on most years census record, but in 1911 he was still in Deptford with his parents, whereas my John Ernest Whiting was in Sheffield with his wife.

If you have the marriage cert can you please tell US who his father is and his occupation please?You don't give us much to work on as we can't see your tree.
