I think I have found the records I am looking for. I found and Edward Matthews born in Alvecote in 1889 or 1890.

I wonder why the ages are not the same. He states he was 21 years 8 months on enlisting in August 1914 yet he would have been 24 years 8 months.
Records show that he was 73 or 74 when he died but the death from Wrexham's cemetery records show he was 78 in June 1968.

Thanks to all for your help.

MORE HELP NEEDED IF POSSIBLE

Edward William Matthews did indeed marry Augusta Irene Robbins on 18th August 1919. Margaret Rose very kindly offered Oxfordshire Lookups and found Edward and Augusta's marriage.

Edward was a bachelor at the time and was also a soldier!
He was 26 years old on 18 August 1919 but he was 27 by 20 February 1920.

I have found military records for Edward Matthews (on Ancestrry) which shows an enlistment on 29th August 1914 for a 21 years, 8 months man which fits the age we are looking for.
It gives his place of birth as Alvecote, Tamworth, Warwickshire.

I have been unable to trace this Edward Matthews on any census or birth records.

These military records are fascinating - absolutely fascinating, and I am most grateful to those people who have patiently digitised these papers for future generations. Not all records have survived of course.
Edward's records show that he was a coal miner prior to enlisting and he is recorded as a coal miner in 1920 when he married our great grandmother.

Would anyone be able to help find Edward Matthews' birth or census from 1901 or 1911?
He was born either Nov - December 1891 or Jan - Feb 1892 according to the military records and marriage details.
Edward's father was called Charles and he was also listed as a coal miner on both marriage certificates.
EDIT: FOUND ON CENSUS 1901 AS BORN IN 1890.

Courtesey of Margaret Rose:
Banns read in Banbury27th July 3rd and 10th August 1919
Edward William Bachelor of this parish
Augusta Irene Robbins spinster of the parish of St Michael Alkerton

18/8/1919 Edward William Matthews 26 yrs bachelor Soldier of Banbury son of Charles a miner
August Irene Robbins 29 yrs spinster daughter of William deceased
witnesses Oscar Charles Cawley, Florence Edith Robbins by Banns.
Married in Alkerton Oxfordshire

Many thanks.

Hi Flick

Through some further research I looked at all the 'Matthews' deaths in Wrexham between 1915 and 1920 and found Augusta Irene Matthews and sure enough, she married an Edward William Matthews in Banbury in summer ot 1919, moved to Wrexham and died in the autumn of 1919.
So, still no further forward in locating Edward's place of birth etc.
Augusta was born in q4 1889, making her about 3 or 4 years older than Edward.

(Just to update you :-) )

He did marry a third time. Again not sure who he married but he is buried with his 2nd wifem Mabel, and their son Ernest, Eleanor's twin who died in 1935 when he was 14.

We do think it may have been Mary Rowley he married but it's just guesswork as this is the only marriage that fits the bill.

He was a widower in 1920, so we 'should' be able to 1. find a marriage and 2. find a corresponding death.
There is just one death for a Matthews in Wrexham that fits - Annie Matthews buried 25/4/1911 aged 18, lived at the workhouse. Buried along with 19 others.

We also believe that there may have been 2 children in the marriage that our grandmother knew nothing about.

Again, many thanks.

No.......forget about that William Henry......he doesn't appear on London baptisms as a child of Richard and Rebecca, who are the parents of Edward registered in Camberwell.

Must go now...................

This is speculation.........don't get excited.LOL!

His age at death on the GRO reords was 74

Name: Edward W Matthews
Birth Date: abt 1894
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1968
Age at Death: 74
Registration district: Wrexham
Inferred County: Denbighshire

A pity he hadn't lived a bit longer......his place of birth would have been recorded on the cert after mid1969 (if the informant knew it, of course)

As Edward was a widower when he married Mabel, it might pay you to look for a young female death/burial on the site you mention

Did he marry for a third time? Or is this a coincidence?

There isn't a marriage in Wrexham before the 1920 one...................

That is a wonderful find. It is very likely that this is the correct family.
I may need to obtain Edward's death certificate to perhaps find his place of birth.
On his marriage cert he appears to have been born 1892-1893.
When he died in 1968, the records on GR show him being 73 but hus burial record at Wrexham shows him as being 78.
Edward could then be born anytime between 1889 - 1895. Mabel was born in August 1891 and as far as we knoe Mabel was older than Edward.

Wrexham have a brilliant online burial serach facility: http://wrexham.gov.uk/english/community/genealogy/cemeteries_search/CemeteriesIndexSearchForm.cfm

Gives lots of information.

I will keep digging but it's strange that Edward doesn't appear anywhere.
He is likely to have been born in Staffordshire if it is the same family.

Thanks.

Found this one on the official 1901................

Charles Matthews 48 Shropshire Pontesbury Staffordshire Walsall Coal Miner

Flick

Flick Report 18 Jan 2012 16:25

Just took a look on 1911...only two Charles Matthews Coal Miners.

One born 1883 - too young

One born 1868, a widower, living with his mother.

We know for certain that Mabel and Edward were the parents of our grandmother. Today I received Eleanor's birth certificate and her parents marriage certificate which gave the same address in Wrexham.

So, apart from Edward's name, age, his father's name and a witness' name we don't actually know much about him. He was married and widowed before 1920.

I'll keep digging and a brainwave will happen!

Thanks.

Oh, and Charles was a coal minor in 1920, Edward a coal minor (hewer - funny as I'm watching Nick Hewer on C4+1)
Edward was a colliery boiler stoker by November 1921.

Thanks for the trouble Flick - much appreciated.

I'm guessing that people didn't necessarily give the correct information when getting married etc.

Will keep on searching.

Someone must transcribe these records as they are quite often different transcriptions to FMP and when you look at the original, there's actually no doubt but they have been mis-transcribed.

p.s. I used to work in a GP surgery spending all day deciphering their notes in order to computerise the consultations!

Which one are you looking for?

What was the father's occuaption?

As GR use FMP's records, you'd have had the same result

I found the info on Ancestry

FOUND IT!

It is transcribed as Edward Hillian Matthew but I don't think this is the Edward Matthews I am looking for.

Wise move to get away from GR for research

BUT....GR do NOT transcribe anything......
