Caroline

I apologise most humbly

I did not run far enough along the ancestry census image to see that the white strip had not been removed.

allotment very kindly forward the image of what you were seeing ......... and ti does indeed look like Rete

all reet was a phrase used in Lancashire and Yorkshire to mean "all right"

?????????????

Dennis

it was common for people in hospital, especially an asylum, to be indicated only by their initials ............ it preserved privacy.

Have you searched under his initials?

What is written in the end column of the 1911 for Tjomas Sinclair is just the end of the word Sunderland ..... whoever filled out the census (presumably father0 spread out his birth place over 2 columns.

so nothing of interest to it.

Caroline - I've seen a number of instances where parents have written the names of deceased children onto the census forms. This could be one of those.

The other line crossed out looks like twins age 0.

Perhaps the crossed out lines ARE those that died?

Also, people who were in hospitals were usually still recorded on census.

crg Report 8 Jan 2012 18:33

I have a copy of his sisters marriage in 1913 and he was not a witness i have also checked the possibility that he used his mothers maiden name and other alias's but none seem to get me any closer !!

Well he can't just 'die' without a trace.

A death must be recorded to be able to dispose of the body properly.

It's possible he changed his name to elude his family, could he have used his mother's maiden name as a surname?

How many places have you looked?
