Anne Report 2 Jan 2012 20:10

I am trying to find a George Brassington - Oldham Lancs.
On the 1911 census this chap is listed as being 5yrs old says born 1906 and living with mother and father and other people. boarding.
but I cannot find his birth records.
I searched for him and the only thing that is coming up is for 2 people called George but there records do not show a mothers maiden name.
My question is - how is a birth of 2 similar named persons in the same district within a couple of years of each other registered with no mothers name?
Any ideas ?
Not sure how to carryu on tracing this person.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 2 Jan 2012 20:17

it'll be registered with a mother's maiden name....records before 3rd Quarter of 1911 did not list the mother's maiden name as a reference point.

Anne, if you tell us more about the George Brassington that you're trying to trace then we'll be in a better position to help you.

Do you know where and when your George died?

These must be the birth records:

Births Sep 1909
Brassington George Oldham 8d 705

Births Dec 1910
BRASSINGTON George Oldham 8d 540

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Jan 2012 20:28

Given that there's only a year between the records would be very easy to go astray without further info.

Wonder if the parents re-used the name?

Deaths Dec 1909
BRASSINGTON George 0 Oldham 8d 480

(They don't say on the original 1911 that any children have died .....)

You should make a note of this site, as you are looking in Lancashire. They often, but not always, show the mother's maiden name

http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Here are the entries for the two births of a George Brassington, one in 1909 and one in 1910

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1909
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
BRASSINGTON George Royton Oldham RADCLIFFE ROY/53/345

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1910
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
BRASSINGTON George Oldham East Oldham HEWITT OEAS/15/182

The mmn for George #1 is Radcliffe, and that for George #2 is Hewitt .......... and that seems likely to be yours.

Hello - sorry I have been side tracked with studying and had not traced it any further.
yes - that is my Nancy Hewitt - St Marks Glodwick, and looks like it is the same Frank Brassington - I was Baptised there too as was my father Brian Hutchinson.
I have been trying to trace my grans family too Emily Hutchinson/Hankey mother Annie Hankey - but I have come to a halt with that one, I ordered her birth cert - and fathers name is not listed on it, so I ordered a wedding cert and she seems to have put her grandads name on it.
I dont have an Ancestry account at the moment, but will try make an effort to look into it a bit further.
Thanks for helping.

Anne Report 27 Jan 2012 15:52

Hello again, yes that is my grans family - I had traced Annie my grans mum and her siblings as far as the latest 1911 census - at park street, prescott, but had not got any further - and then i kind of came to a grinding halt when I couldnt find out who Emilys dad is, she had put William Hankeys name as being her father on the wedding cert, and no name on the birth cert - so hmm - supposed I will never know who he was - My mum seems to think that Annie did eventually get married to someone called Williams and they lived on the same street as my gran in Glodwick - he was possibly in the Navy - and my dad called me Anne after her - my mum didnt want me to be called Annie. Would have been nice to know a bit more about that family but not sure how to go about it, I was very close to my gran - but obviously nothingh as ever mentioned about her family - and I was about 14 when she died.

Alas Anne you may never know who Emily's father was. It looks like her Mum Annie stayed at home as housekeeper to her widowed father. Probably Emily's father was someone who lived locally as Annie was unlikely to meet anyone through her employment.

Do you know when Annie Hankey died please Anne?

I don't see a marriage for her to a Williams.

There is this marriage......
