Find Ancestors

hello all,

im wondering if anyone can give me some assitance or pointers in how to trace my great grandmothers family history we called her nan as to appose great nan. She sadly passed away this year in august so i can no longer seek her help. Her name was sarah elizabeth cook born 1918 and passed away 2011. Her parents were Richard H cook 1898c and elizabeth bull 1900c she was born orsett and i believe her father could of been too but unsure.... i know she had many siblings one called veronica but i have no further info im trying to find that out, im also searching for her parents dobs and marriage info i have tried freebmd but cannot pin point it and also familysearch not sure if im using it right?

to search for births on FreeBMD just put in surname Cook and then mother's maiden name Bull and years 1918 to 1930 and see what comes up eg:

i know veronica is definately a match the others im unsure of could be i just did a freebmd search and also found

when on FreeBMD if you click on the Reg District it will bring up another window, eg

click on HERE and it will bring up information regarding all the places in that district.

ah yes i see thank you, i know veronica was the youngest. Im glad i now have this information do you know how i could trace the parents i found the marriage but i cannot find the fathers birth

If you are absolutely sure of her parent's names then you need to buy the marriage certificate which will give their ages and father's names and occupations, otherwise you need to start with her birth cert and then work backwards

yes my nan gave me that information before she passed away so im pretty sure of that

with a name like Richard Cook it might be difficult without the marr cert to give his father's name,

Also you don't know where he was born.

Just put Richard H Cook into FreeBMD and search from say 1890 to 1900, and see what come up

there are 10 births between those years with that name the only one in Essex is

There is a Tree on Ancestry that is fairly well documented and lists this as the Richard Henry Cook in the marriage. The cert would confrim whether it is correct. It does tie up with the West Ham birth
