Think he must have been back and forth. The 1903 ER shows him as a resident:

Reginald, go to your first post on this thread and click "edit". You can then get back to the title and add "Australia".

There are some very experienced Oz researchers who may then spot it - I only have access to what's on Ancestry.

A possibility for his wife's birth:

Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922

Name: Ethel Florence Fenwick
Birth Date: 23 Jan 1883
Father's Name: William Fenwick
Mother's name: Mary Anne Donelly
Birth Place: Ethelton
Registration Place: Port Adelaide, South Australia
Page Number: 187
Volume Number: 298

But you'd need marriage cert to confirm.

Cant see a death for him in Australia up to 1990s

Newspaper article ( Trove ) shows he was imprisoned for 3 months for stealing. If so....he may have found it difficult after release to find employment, and "perhaps" changed his name, or even left the country ( possible )

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/titles?state=New South Wales

"snippet"
THEFTS FROM AN HOTEL.The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Thursday 21 January 1909
Article... THEFTS FROM AN HOTEL. At the Water Police court yesterday Gilbert Lionel furlong, 28, a labourer, was charged with stealing an electro-plated tanKard, a table-knife, a table knife, and two tumblers, valued at 18s 4d,
the property of Walter Halifax Watson of the Paragon Hotel, Circular Quay ...ect ( more on-line ).......3 months Imprisonment.

Also.....having spent time in prison, its possibly may not be found on more current "Australian Voteing Electorol rolls" after being released.

Below is the marriage that Helen found FURLONG - FRASER
It took place in South Australia in 1914.
The Status ( W ) shows Ethel Florence FURLONG was a Widow.
So a death for Gilbert Lionel FURLONG somewhere ( Country? ) between 1911 & 1914.

Given names: Charles Matthew
Bride: FURLONG
Given names: Ethel Florence
Date: 1914-11-28

Hi, I feel I owe you guys an explanation. Gilbert L was my grandfather's
(Alfred) long lost brother, My task is to track down and contact any kin from his first marriage that may be living in Oz. thanks to all of you for your invaluable help. wishing you all a very happy new year Reg.

Hi Reg.

As already stated......there were no childrens births registered in Victoria or South Australia on bdm index's to Gilbert Lionel FURLONG and Ethel Florence FENWICK.

If they married in 1911 and Gilbert Lionel Furlong was deceased by 1914 ( according to his wifes 2nd marriage in S.A as Widow ) then there is only a 2 to 3 year window for any children births.
As there is nothing showing up on the birth index's....i doubt there are any decendants. To confirm this.....it would be best to find and purchase the death cert of Ethel Florence FRAZER ( FENWICK ) as it should list on her death cert any children born to her ( 1st & 2nd marriages )

In general...Australian death certs lists ( names and ages )of any children ( deceased or living ) of a deceased person.
